How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is 600 mg daily. The dose can be increased to 600-2400 mg per day.

Method

Take the tablets with water. You can break the tablet in half to make it easier to swallow, but do not divide it into smaller than half doses. Take the medicine twice a day, usually at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 2400 mg.

  • Swelling of the face, lips, eyelids, throat, or mouth, with difficulty breathing, speaking, or swallowing
  • Rash and/or fever (severe skin reactions like DRESS or AEGP)
  • Low blood sodium (symptoms include extreme drowsiness, confusion, muscle twitching, worsening seizures)
  • Severe blistering skin changes on lips, eyes, mouth, nose, or genitals (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Red, patchy rash mainly on the face, with fatigue, fever, nausea, or loss of appetite (lupus-like symptoms)
  • Flu-like symptoms with yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (liver inflammation)
  • Severe upper abdominal pain, vomiting, loss of appetite (pancreatitis)
  • Irregular or very fast or slow heart rate

Important Warnings

  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of your face, lips, throat, or mouth, difficulty breathing, fever, or rash.
  • Tell your doctor if your skin or eyes turn yellow, which could be a sign of liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • Contact your doctor if your seizures increase or get worse, especially if you are a child.
  • Report to your doctor if you have symptoms like fatigue, paleness, frequent infections, bruising, or bleeding, which could indicate blood disorders.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, tell your doctor immediately.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Numerous potential adverse effects, such as hyponatraemia, hematological changes and risk of hepatic injury. May increase the need for a vitamin D supplement. (updated 10.11.2025)
