How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is 600 mg daily. Your doctor may increase this dose to find what works best for you, typically between 600 mg and 2400 mg per day.

Method

Swallow the tablets with a little water, usually twice a day around the same time each day. Tablets can be split to make swallowing easier, but not to take half a dose.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is typically 2400 mg.

RARE
  • Severe skin reactions with blisters or peeling (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat with difficulty breathing (signs of a serious allergic reaction)
  • Yellow skin or eyes (signs of liver inflammation)
  • Changes in blood cells, such as unusual bleeding or bruising, frequent infections with fever, or extreme tiredness and paleness
  • Symptoms of low sodium in the blood, such as confusion, muscle twitching, or worsening seizures
  • Bone problems, including weaker bones and fractures, especially with long-term use
  • High blood pressure or hives (itchy rash)

Important Warnings

  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of lips, face, throat, or mouth, sudden difficulty breathing, fever, or a severe rash.
  • Contact your doctor if your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow, as this can be a sign of liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if your seizures become more frequent or worse.
  • Inform your doctor if you experience unusual tiredness, pale skin, frequent infections, sore throat, easy bruising or bleeding, or red/purple spots on your skin, as these could be signs of blood problems.
  • If you are a woman using hormonal birth control (like birth control pills), this medicine may make it less effective. Discuss other contraception methods with your doctor.

  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as it can worsen your seizures.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Numerous potential adverse effects, such as hyponatraemia, hematological changes and risk of hepatic injury. May increase the need for a vitamin D supplement. (updated 10.11.2025)
