Ovestin is a hormone replacement medicine containing estriol, used to relieve menopause symptoms in women whose last natural period was at least 12 months ago.

How to Use

Dosage

Initially, 4-8 mg daily (2-4 tablets of 2 mg strength or 4-8 tablets of 1 mg strength) for a few weeks. After that, the dose is gradually reduced to 1-2 mg daily. Your doctor will determine the exact dosage.

Method

Swallow the tablets with water or another liquid. Take the entire daily dose at once, around the same time each day.

Important

Do not exceed the maximum daily dose prescribed by your doctor. This maximum dose should not be used for more than a few weeks.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Swelling and tenderness of the breasts
  • Slight bleeding from the vagina
  • More vaginal discharge
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Fluid build-up in tissues, often seen as swollen ankles or feet
  • Flu-like symptoms
RARE
  • Gallstones
  • Skin discoloration, especially on the face and neck, known as 'pregnancy spots' (chloasma)
  • Painful reddish lumps on the skin (erythema nodosum)
  • Rash with target-shaped red blisters or sores (erythema multiforme)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you have or have had breast cancer, or if cancer of the uterine lining is suspected or you have certain types of cancer sensitive to estrogen.
  • Do not use if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding or untreated overgrowth of the uterine lining.
  • Do not use if you have had a blood clot in a vein (like in the legs or lungs), or a blood clotting disorder.
  • Do not use if you have recently had a heart attack, stroke, or chest pain due to blood clots in arteries.
  • Do not use if you have a liver disease and your liver tests are not normal.

  • Do not use if you have a rare blood disease called porphyria or are allergic to estriol or any other ingredient in Ovestin.
  • Stop taking Ovestin and see a doctor right away if any of these conditions appear for the first time while you are using it.
  • Stop taking Ovestin if your skin or eyes turn yellow (signs of liver problems), your blood pressure rises quickly, you get a new migraine-like headache, you become pregnant, or you have swelling of your face, tongue, or throat with difficulty breathing (signs of an allergic reaction).
  • Stop taking Ovestin if you see signs of a blood clot, such as painful swelling or redness in your legs, sudden chest pain, or trouble breathing.

Category D

The classification depends on the dosage form. Systemic use (for example estrogen patch, tablet, gel): Avoid use in older adults. In systemic use, consider potential adverse effects, such as risk of cardiovascular diseases and venous thromboembolism. Consider potential interactions.
