How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start with a low dose, gradually increasing it over a week until you reach a suitable maintenance dose, which is typically 5-10 mg (0.25-0.5 ml) per kilogram of body weight per day.

Method

Take Ospolot by mouth, preferably divided into three doses daily. You can mix the dose with a small amount of water, juice, milk, yogurt, or oatmeal right before taking it, but avoid carbonated drinks or hot food.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose, which is usually up to 10 mg (0.5 ml) per kilogram of body weight per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach upset (e.g., nausea, vomiting)

  • Difficulty breathing and even respiratory failure (dose-dependent)
  • Shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat
  • Tingling in arms, legs, or face (dose-dependent)
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Double vision
  • Hiccups, weight loss, or loss of appetite
RARE
  • Hallucinations, restlessness, lack of enthusiasm
  • Muscle weakness, joint pain
  • Increased number of seizures, grand mal seizures
  • Delayed hypersensitivity reaction affecting multiple organ systems, with fever, rash, inflamed blood vessels (vasculitis), swollen lymph nodes, joint pain, abnormal white blood cell count, enlarged liver or spleen, and severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Lyell's syndrome)
  • Acute kidney failure
  • Significant vision impairment, polyneuritis (inflammation of multiple nerves)
  • Toxic reactions in the liver and/or elevated liver enzyme levels
  • Depressed mood/depression, personality changes and behavioral abnormalities (e.g., aggressiveness, irritability, mood swings), and cognitive impairment
  • Diarrhea

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Ospolot if you are allergic to sultiam, other sulfonamides, or any other ingredients listed in the leaflet.
  • Do not take Ospolot if you have an overactive thyroid, high blood pressure, or acute porphyria (a rare blood disorder).
  • Talk to your doctor before taking Ospolot if you have kidney problems or a mental health condition.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience allergic reactions like fever, sore throat, rash, swollen lymph nodes, or flu-like symptoms, as you may need blood tests and could need to stop the medicine.
  • Some people taking epilepsy medicines, including Ospolot, have had thoughts of harming themselves or suicide; contact your doctor immediately if you have such thoughts.

  • This medicine may harm an unborn child, so do not use it during pregnancy unless specifically told by your doctor, and use effective contraception if you are of childbearing age.
  • It is unknown if Ospolot passes into breast milk, so you should not take it while breastfeeding.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking Ospolot, as it can unpredictably change and increase the medicine's effects.
  • Ospolot can affect your ability to drive or use machines, especially when combined with alcohol, so be careful.
