Oriptan tablets contain sumatriptan and are used to treat migraine attacks in adults by narrowing blood vessels in the brain, helping to relieve headache and other migraine symptoms.

How to Use

Dosage

Take one 50 mg tablet. If 50 mg didn't work before and your doctor prescribed 100 mg, you may take two 50 mg tablets.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. Take it as soon as you feel a migraine starting, but only after migraine symptoms have begun, not to prevent an attack.

Important

Do not take more than 100 mg (two 50 mg tablets) in a 24-hour period.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • tingling, dizziness, drowsiness, unusual sensations
  • temporary rise in blood pressure (shortly after taking), flushing
  • difficulty breathing
  • nausea, vomiting
  • feeling of heaviness, muscle pain
  • pain, feeling of warmth or cold, pressure or tightness. These symptoms are usually temporary and can occur anywhere in the body, including the chest and throat.
  • feeling of weakness, tiredness
RARE
  • slight changes in liver function test results
  • anxiety
  • seizures (epileptic attacks), involuntary movements, tremor, involuntary eye movements (nystagmus)
  • vision problems like flashes of light, blurred vision, or loss of vision (these can also be due to the migraine attack itself)
  • heart problems including fast or slow heartbeat, changes in heart rhythm, chest pain (angina), or heart attack
  • low blood pressure, Raynaud's syndrome (a condition where fingers and toes become white and numb)
  • inflammation of the large intestine (symptoms include pain in the lower left abdomen and bloody diarrhea), diarrhea
  • excessive sweating
  • stiff neck, joint pain
  • if you have recently been injured or have inflammation (e.g., rheumatism, bowel inflammation), you may experience pain or worsening pain at the site of injury or inflammation
  • difficulty swallowing

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to sumatriptan, any other ingredient in this medicine, or to sulfonamide antibiotics.
  • Do not take if you have heart problems like ischemic heart disease, angina, or have had a heart attack.
  • Do not take if you have circulation problems in your legs causing cramp-like pain when walking.
  • Do not take if you have had a stroke or a mini-stroke (TIA).
  • Do not take if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure. You might be able to use Oriptan if your blood pressure is mildly high and being treated.

  • Do not take if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not take if you are using other migraine medicines containing ergotamine or similar substances (like methysergide) or other triptans/5HT1-receptor agonists.
  • Do not take if you are using certain depression medicines (MAO inhibitors within the last 2 weeks, SSRIs, or SNRIs).
  • Do not take if you are under 18 or over 65 years old, unless prescribed by a doctor.
  • Using sumatriptan too often (more than 10 days a month) can make your headaches worse. Your doctor might suggest you stop taking it.
  • If you feel chest pain or tightness after taking Oriptan, seek immediate medical help if it doesn't go away quickly or gets worse.
  • Oriptan should only be used for doctor-confirmed migraine. If your headache is not typical for your migraine, consult a doctor first.
  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a family, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use.
  • Migraine symptoms or this medicine can make you drowsy. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy.
  • This medicine contains lactose. If you have a sugar intolerance, talk to your doctor before taking it.
  • If you smoke a lot, use nicotine replacement, are a male over 40, or a post-menopausal woman, you might have a higher risk of heart problems. Tell your doctor so they can check your heart.
  • If you have a history of seizures or other risk factors for seizures (e.g., head injury, alcoholism), discuss this with your doctor.
  • If you have liver or kidney disease, discuss this with your doctor.
