Orbeos is a statin medicine used to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood and reduce the risk of heart disease.

How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10 mg once a day for adults and children aged 10 and over.

Method

You can chew the tablet or swallow it whole with water, with or without food, but try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of the nasal passages, sore throat, nosebleed.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Increased blood sugar levels (monitor closely if you have diabetes), increased levels of creatine kinase in the blood.
  • Headache.
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, and back pain.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with sudden wheezing, chest pain or tightness, swelling of eyelids, face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or collapse.
  • Severe skin condition with extensive peeling and swelling of the skin, blistering of the skin, mouth, eyes and genitals, and fever. Rash with pink-red spots, especially on palms and soles, which may blister.
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, or rupture, or reddish-brown urine. This can be signs of abnormal muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), especially if you also feel unwell or have a high fever.
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising. This may indicate liver problems. Contact your doctor immediately.
  • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice), due to bile duct blockage.
  • Tendon injury.
  • Skin rash or mouth sores that may occur on the skin or in the mouth (lichenoid drug reaction), purplish skin lesions (vasculitis).
  • Hearing loss.
  • Enlargement of breasts in men (gynecomastia).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Orbeos if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Orbeos if you have or have had a liver disease or abnormal liver function test results.
  • Do not take Orbeos if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or are a woman of childbearing age not using reliable contraception.
  • Do not take Orbeos if you are taking the combination of glecaprevir/pibrentasvir for hepatitis C treatment.
  • If you are taking fusidic acid (an antibiotic for bacterial infections), you must temporarily stop taking Orbeos. Your doctor will tell you when it's safe to restart Orbeos.
