Orbeos is a medicine (statin) used to lower high levels of fats (cholesterol and triglycerides) in your blood when diet and lifestyle changes are not enough.

How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults and children aged 10 and older is 10 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase your dose every 4 weeks or more if needed.

Method

You can chew the Orbeos tablets or swallow them whole with water. You can take them any time of day, with or without food, but try to take them at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of nasal passages, sore throat, nosebleed
  • Allergic reactions
  • Increased blood sugar levels (monitor closely if you have diabetes), increased creatinine kinase levels
  • Headache
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, and back pain
  • Abnormal liver function test results
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, tongue, or throat, causing difficulty breathing.
  • Severe skin reaction with peeling and swelling of skin, blisters on skin, mouth, eyes, genitals, and fever; rash with pinkish-red spots, possibly with blisters, especially on palms or soles.
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, rupture, or red-brown urine (signs of rhabdomyolysis).
  • Vision disorder
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising
  • Bile duct blockage (yellowing of skin and whites of eyes)
  • Tendon injury
  • Skin rash or mouth sores (lichenoid drug reaction)
  • Purplish skin lesions (signs of vasculitis)
  • Allergic reaction with sudden wheezing, chest pain or tightness, swelling of eyelids, face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, fainting.
  • Hearing loss
  • Gynecomastia (breast enlargement in men)
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, decreased blood sugar levels (monitor closely if you have diabetes)
  • Nightmares, sleeplessness
  • Dizziness, numbness or tingling in fingers and toes, reduced sense of pain or touch, altered taste, memory loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in ears and/or head
  • Vomiting, burping, upper and lower abdominal pain, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas causing stomach pain)
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Rash, itching, hives, hair loss
  • Neck pain, muscle fatigue
  • Tiredness, feeling unwell, weakness, chest pain, swelling (especially in ankles), fever
  • Positive white blood cell test in urine
  • Muscle weakness (Myasthenia gravis, ocular myasthenia), which can worsen after activity, or cause double vision, drooping eyelids, or difficulty swallowing or breathing.
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Depression
  • Breathing problems, including persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, high fat levels, are overweight, and have high blood pressure).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Orbeos if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Orbeos if you have or have ever had liver problems or abnormal liver blood test results.
  • Do not take Orbeos if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Women of childbearing age must use reliable birth control.
  • Do not take Orbeos if you are using glecaprevir/pibrentasvir to treat hepatitis C.
  • Tell your doctor if you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if you also feel unwell or have a high fever, as these could be signs of a serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis).

  • If you are taking or have recently taken fusidic acid (an antibiotic), you must temporarily stop taking Orbeos. This combination can cause severe muscle problems.
  • Limit grapefruit juice to 1-2 small glasses per day and avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking Orbeos.
