Orbeos is a statin medicine used to lower high levels of cholesterol and other fats in your blood, and it can also reduce the risk of heart disease.

How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults and children 10 years and older is 10 mg once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, at any time of day, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nose and throat inflammation, sore throat, nosebleeds.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Increased blood sugar levels (if you have diabetes, carefully monitor your blood sugar).
  • Headache.
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, and back pain.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, which can cause difficulty breathing.
  • Serious skin condition with severe peeling and swelling of the skin, blisters on the skin, mouth, eyes, and genitals, along with fever.
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, muscle rupture, or reddish-brown urine. This might be due to abnormal muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), which can be life-threatening and lead to kidney problems.
  • Vision problems.
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising.
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), which may indicate bile duct blockage.
  • Tendon injury.
  • Skin rash or sores in the mouth (lichenoid drug reaction).
  • Purple skin lesions (signs of blood vessel inflammation).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Orbeos if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any of its other ingredients.
  • Do not take Orbeos if you have or have had liver problems, or unexplained abnormal liver blood test results.
  • Do not take Orbeos if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Do not take Orbeos if you are a woman of childbearing age and are not using reliable birth control.
  • Do not take Orbeos if you are taking glecaprevir/pibrentasvir to treat hepatitis C.

  • Talk to your doctor before taking Orbeos if you have severe lung disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking or have taken fusidic acid (an antibiotic) within the last 7 days, as this combination can cause serious muscle problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney problems or an underactive thyroid.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had repeated muscle aches or weakness, or if there is a history of muscle problems in your family.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Do not drink more than 1-2 small glasses of grapefruit juice daily, as large amounts can affect how Orbeos works.
  • If you have diabetes or are at risk of developing it, your doctor will closely monitor your blood sugar levels.
  • Do not drive or use machines if this medicine makes you feel dizzy or affects your ability to concentrate.
  • If you experience persistent muscle weakness, talk to your doctor, as further tests and treatment may be needed.
  • Orbeos contains lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • Orbeos contains sodium. This medicine contains less than 1 mmol (23 mg) sodium per tablet, meaning it is 'sodium-free'.
