Orbeos is a medicine that helps lower high levels of fats, cholesterol, and triglycerides in your blood and can also reduce the risk of heart disease.

How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults and children aged 10 and older is 10 mg once a day.

Method

Swallow Orbeos tablets whole with water. You can take them at any time of day, with or without food, but try to take your tablet at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose of Orbeos is 80 mg once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of nasal passages, sore throat, nosebleed.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Increased blood sugar levels (if you have diabetes, continue careful monitoring of your sugar levels), increased creatine kinase levels in the blood.
  • Headache.
  • Nausea, constipation, flatulence, indigestion, diarrhea.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, and back pain.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction, causing swelling of the face, tongue, and throat, which may lead to difficulty breathing.
  • Serious skin condition with severe peeling and swelling of the skin, blistering on the skin, mouth, eyes, and genitals, and fever. Rash with pink-red, possibly blistered, spots, especially on palms or soles of feet.
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, rupture, or reddish-brown urine. Especially if you also feel unwell or have a high fever, these symptoms may be due to abnormal muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), which can be life-threatening and lead to kidney damage.
  • Unexpected or unusual bleeding or bruising, which may be a sign of liver problems.
  • Lupus-like syndrome (including rash, joint problems, and effects on blood cells).
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, decreased blood sugar levels (if you have diabetes, continue careful monitoring of your sugar levels).
  • Nightmares, insomnia.
  • Dizziness, numbness or tingling in fingers and toes, reduced sense of pain or touch, altered taste, memory loss.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Ringing in the ears and/or head.
  • Vomiting, belching, upper and lower abdominal pain, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas causing abdominal pain).
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • Rash, itching, hives, hair loss.
  • Neck pain, muscle fatigue.
  • Fatigue, general feeling of being unwell, weakness, chest pain, swelling, especially in ankles, fever.
  • Positive white blood cell test in urine.
  • Vision disturbance.
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising.
  • Blockage in bile ducts (yellowing of skin and whites of eyes).
  • Tendon injury.
  • Possible skin rash or mouth sores (lichenoid drug reaction).
  • Purple skin lesions (signs of blood vessel inflammation, vasculitis).
  • Allergic reaction with sudden wheezing, chest pain or tightness; swelling of eyelids, face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat; breathing difficulties, fainting.
  • Hearing loss.
  • Gynecomastia (enlargement of breast tissue in men).
  • Persistent muscle weakness.
  • Myasthenia gravis (a disease causing general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles).
  • Ocular myasthenia (a disease causing eye muscle weakness).
  • Sexual dysfunction.
  • Depression.
  • Breathing difficulties, such as persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever.
  • Diabetes. This is more likely if you have high blood sugar and fat levels, are overweight, and have high blood pressure. Your doctor will monitor you during treatment.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have or have had liver disease.
  • Do not take if your liver blood tests have shown unexplained abnormal results.
  • Do not take if you are a woman of childbearing age and are not using reliable contraception.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

  • Do not take if you are breastfeeding.
  • Do not take if you are using glecaprevir/pibrentasvir combination for hepatitis C treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe lung disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking or have taken fusidic acid in the last 7 days. Combining it with Orbeos can lead to serious muscle problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a stroke with bleeding in the brain, or small fluid pockets in the brain from previous strokes.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).
  • Tell your doctor if you have had repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pains, or if you or a close relative has had muscle problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had muscle problems before when using other medicines to lower blood fats (like other statins or fibrates).
  • Tell your doctor if you regularly drink a lot of alcohol.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you are over 70 years old.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had myasthenia (a disease with general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles) or ocular myasthenia (a disease causing eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen the condition or lead to new onset myasthenia.
  • Do not drink more than 1–2 small glasses of grapefruit juice daily, as large amounts can change how Orbeos works.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.4.2023)
