How to Use

Dosage

Children over 10 years and adolescents usually start with 500 mg or 850 mg once daily. Adults usually start with 500 mg or 850 mg two or three times daily. Your doctor may prescribe a lower dose if your kidney function is reduced.

Method

Take the tablets with or after a meal to help prevent stomach problems. Swallow each tablet whole with a glass of water, do not crush or chew them.

Important

The maximum daily dose for children aged 10 and older and adolescents is 2000 mg, divided into two or three doses. The maximum daily dose for adults is 3000 mg, divided into three doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Digestive problems such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and loss of appetite. These usually happen at the start of treatment and improve if you take the medicine with or after meals.
  • Taste disturbance.
  • Low or reduced vitamin B12 levels in the blood, which can cause extreme tiredness, a sore or red tongue, tingling sensations, or pale/yellowish skin.
RARE
  • Lactic acidosis (a very rare but serious side effect, especially if your kidneys are not working well). Symptoms include vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, a general feeling of being unwell, severe tiredness, and difficulty breathing.
  • Abnormal liver function test results or hepatitis (liver inflammation that can cause tiredness, loss of appetite, weight loss, and yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes).
  • Skin reactions such as redness, itching, or hives (itchy rash).

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking Oramet-hexal immediately and contact a doctor or the nearest hospital if you experience symptoms of lactic acidosis (e.g., vomiting, stomach pain, difficulty breathing, extreme tiredness), as it can lead to coma.
  • Do not take Oramet-hexal if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Oramet-hexal if you have severe kidney or liver problems.
  • Do not take Oramet-hexal if your diabetes is not well-controlled, with symptoms like very high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, or ketoacidosis.
  • Do not take Oramet-hexal if you are severely dehydrated (loss of body fluid), for example, from severe or long-lasting diarrhea, vomiting, or fever.

  • Do not take Oramet-hexal if you have a severe infection (e.g., in your lungs, airways, or kidneys) or if you are being treated for acute heart failure, have recently had a heart attack, or have severe circulation or breathing problems.
  • Do not take Oramet-hexal if you drink a lot of alcohol.
