How to Use

Dosage

Take 1 Oramet 500 mg or 1 Oramet 850 mg tablet, 2 to 3 times a day. Your doctor will adjust your dose based on your blood sugar levels.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water, during or after meals, to help avoid stomach upset. Do not crush or chew the tablets.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 3000 mg of metformin (which is six 500 mg tablets), taken in 3 divided doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Loss of appetite
RARE
  • Changes in taste
  • Low vitamin B12 levels, which can cause extreme tiredness, a sore red tongue, tingling, or pale/yellow skin.
  • Lactic acidosis (a very rare but serious condition, especially if kidneys are not working well; see warnings)
  • Skin redness
  • Itching
  • Itchy rash
  • Abnormal liver tests or liver inflammation (symptoms like tiredness, loss of appetite, weight loss, yellow skin/eyes)

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking Oramet and get medical help right away if you notice signs of lactic acidosis (like severe nausea, stomach pain, muscle cramps, feeling very tired, or trouble breathing), as it is a very serious but rare side effect that can lead to coma.
  • Do not take if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredient in Oramet.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney or liver problems, serious heart conditions (like recent heart attack or severe heart failure), severe infection, are very dehydrated, or drink a lot of alcohol regularly.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby. Do not use Oramet if you are breastfeeding.
  • Oramet alone usually doesn't cause low blood sugar, but if you take it with other diabetes medicines, you might be at risk. Watch for symptoms like weakness, dizziness, or fast heartbeat.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment or tissue hypoxia. May reduce the absorption of vitamin B12. Consider risk of lactic acidosis. The drug should be paused during fever, gastroenteritis or dehydration, and before surgery or imaging with a contrast agent. (updated 20.5.2024)
