How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you your exact dose, which usually starts at 10 mg or 20 mg once a day.

Method

Take your tablet in the morning with food. Swallow it whole with water and do not chew. You can divide the tablet if needed.

Important

The highest daily dose is typically 50 mg or 60 mg, depending on your condition. For people over 65, the maximum daily dose is 40 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Changes in sexual desire or ability (e.g., unable to have an orgasm, problems with erection or ejaculation)
  • Headache
  • Feeling dizzy or shaky (tremor)
  • Sweating
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia) or feeling very tired
RARE
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding, including blood in vomit or stools.
  • Seizures (fits).
  • Feeling restless and unable to sit or stand still (akathisia).
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as red, lumpy skin rash, swelling of eyelids, face, lips, mouth, or tongue, itching, or breathing problems.
  • Serotonin syndrome, with symptoms like extreme excitement, confusion, restlessness, feeling hot, sweating, shaking, strange sights or sounds (hallucinations), stiff muscles, or fast heartbeat.
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide (especially when starting treatment or after stopping).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Optipar if you are taking or have recently taken medicines called MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors).
  • Do not use Optipar if you are allergic to paroxetine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor right away or go to a hospital.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking Optipar, as it can make your symptoms or side effects worse.
  • If you feel dizzy, confused, tired, or have vision problems, do not drive or use machines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Serotonergic. Consider another SSRI antidepressant for primary treatment. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider potential significant interactions, especially with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 12.2.2024)
