How to Use

Dosage

One Optinate Septimum 35 mg tablet once a week.

Method

Take the tablet while sitting or standing with at least 120 ml of plain water. Swallow it whole; do not suck or chew it, and do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking it.

Important

Take one tablet on your chosen day of the week. Do not take more than one tablet per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Upset stomach, feeling sick, stomach pain or cramps, constipation, feeling full, bloating, diarrhea.
  • Pain in bones, muscles, or joints.
  • Headache.
RARE
  • Swelling or sores in the food pipe, causing pain and trouble swallowing, stomach inflammation, or inflammation in the first part of the small intestine.
  • Swelling of the iris (the colored part of the eye), causing red, painful eyes and possibly blurry vision.
  • Swelling of the tongue (red, swollen, possibly painful) or narrowing of the food pipe.
  • Abnormal liver test results shown in blood tests.
  • Very bad allergic reactions like swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, trouble swallowing, itchy rash, or breathing problems.
  • Severe skin reactions, possibly with blisters.
  • Eye inflammation with pain, red eyes, and sensitivity to light.
  • Inflammation in the eye socket, causing pain, swelling, red eyes, bulging eyes, and vision problems.
  • Bone damage in the jaw, often after a tooth is pulled, with slow healing and infection.
  • Problems with your food pipe like pain or trouble swallowing, chest pain, heartburn, or worse heartburn.
  • Unusual breaks in the thigh bone; tell your doctor if you have pain, weakness, or discomfort in your thigh, hip, or groin.
  • Ear pain, ear infection, and/or fluid coming from the ear, which might be signs of bone damage in the ear.
  • Hair loss.
  • Liver problems, some of which were severe.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take if your doctor said you have very low calcium in your blood.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney problems.
  • You must be able to sit or stand upright for at least 30 minutes after taking the tablet.

  • Talk to your doctor if you have problems with your bones or minerals, like not enough vitamin D.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had problems with your food pipe (esophagus), such as pain or trouble swallowing.
  • Talk to your doctor if you cannot digest certain sugars, like lactose.
  • Talk to your doctor or dentist if you have jaw pain, swelling, numbness, a heavy feeling in your jaw, or a loose tooth, especially if you are having dental work.
