How to Use

Dosage

This medication is applied by a healthcare professional as part of the preparation for eye surgery.

Method

A sterile cotton swab soaked in the solution is used to clean the eyelashes, eyelids, cheeks, and forehead in a circular motion, repeated three times. The eye surface (cornea, conjunctiva) is also rinsed with the solution, left for three minutes, then rinsed off with saline solution.

Important

This medication is typically used once as part of a surgical procedure.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Cloudy spots on the cornea (the clear front part of the eye) due to calcium build-up during treatment, especially if the cornea is severely damaged.
RARE
  • Contact dermatitis; irritation of the conjunctiva (the clear membrane covering the eye) with redness, bumps, and itching.
  • Regular and long-term use of povidone-iodine may affect the thyroid gland, potentially leading to low thyroid hormone production or, in some cases, an overactive thyroid. This is especially relevant for premature babies, newborns, and those at risk (e.g., burn patients, those with underlying thyroid issues, iodine deficiency, pregnant or breastfeeding women).
  • Redness of the conjunctiva (white part of the eye).
  • Eye irritation, local inflammation on the eye surface (superficial punctate keratitis, epitheliopathy), dry eyes.
  • Yellow staining left on the eyes and temporary brown discoloration of the skin.
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock), including difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue, rash with irritation, and red, itchy bumps (hives).
