How to Use

Dosage

For cancer treatment: On the treatment day, take 8 mg 1-2 hours before treatment, then another 8 mg 12 hours later. On following days (adults): 8 mg twice daily for up to 5 days. For children, your doctor will decide the dose, up to 8 mg daily for up to 5 days. For surgery (adults): 4-8 mg 1 hour before surgery.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water.

Important

For adults, the maximum daily dose is usually 16 mg for cancer treatment. For children, the maximum daily dose is 8 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Feeling of warmth or flushing
  • Constipation
RARE
  • Convulsions
  • Movement disorders
  • Irregular or slow heartbeat
  • Chest pain
  • Low blood pressure
  • Hiccups
  • Symptom-free increase in liver enzyme values (seen in blood tests)
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Heart rhythm disorders (sometimes causing sudden loss of consciousness)
  • Dizziness (mainly with fast intravenous injection)
  • Temporary blurred vision or vision disturbances
  • Temporary loss of vision
  • Widespread blistering rash and peeling skin (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Myocardial ischemia (symptoms include sudden chest pain or a squeezing feeling in the chest)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to ondansetron or similar medicines (like granisetron or palonosetron).
  • Do not take if you are using apomorphine (for Parkinson's disease).
  • Tell your doctor if you have had heart problems, like an irregular heartbeat.
  • Tell your doctor if you have bowel problems or liver disease.
  • This medicine should not be used during the first three months of pregnancy as it might slightly increase the risk of cleft lip or palate in the baby. Use effective birth control if you are a woman of childbearing age.

  • Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medicine, as it can pass into breast milk.
  • If you have a sugar intolerance (lactose), talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific cautions. May prolong the QT interval especially with other preparations prolonging QT. Take interactions into account. (updated 20.5.2024)
