How to Use

Dosage

For cancer treatment, adults usually receive 8-32 mg daily. For preventing or treating nausea after surgery, the dose is typically 4 mg.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion into a vein, usually by a doctor or nurse.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is usually 32 mg. If you have liver problems, the maximum is 8 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Feeling warm or flushed
  • Irritation or redness at the injection site
RARE
  • Chest pain, irregular or slow heartbeat, or feeling pressure in your chest (myocardial ischemia).
  • Serious allergic reactions, including itchy rash, swelling of the eyelids, face, lips, mouth or tongue (anaphylaxis).
  • Low blood pressure, making you feel weak or dizzy.
  • Seizures (fits).
  • Unusual body movements or shaking.
  • Hiccups.
  • Changes in liver function tests.
  • Feeling dizzy or faint, blurred vision, or temporary blindness (usually lasting less than 20 minutes).
  • Skin rash, like red spots or bumps under the skin (hives), which can turn into large blisters.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to ondansetron or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are taking apomorphine (a medicine for Parkinson's disease).
  • Tell your doctor if you have a blocked intestine or severe constipation, as this medicine can slow bowel movements.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have recently had your tonsils removed.

  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, like an irregular heartbeat, or if you have problems with your blood salt levels (potassium, sodium, magnesium).
  • This medicine should not be used during the first three months of pregnancy as it may slightly increase the risk of a baby being born with a cleft lip or palate. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning a pregnancy, or if you are a woman of childbearing potential and not using effective contraception.
  • Do not breastfeed if you are taking this medicine, as ondansetron can pass into breast milk.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific cautions. May prolong the QT interval especially with other preparations prolonging QT. Take interactions into account. (updated 20.5.2024)
