How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your treatment and liver health. It is usually 8-32 mg daily for cancer treatment or 4 mg after surgery.

Method

This medicine is given directly into a vein by a doctor or nurse, either as a quick injection or a slow infusion.

Important

A single dose should not be more than 16 mg. If you have liver problems, your maximum daily dose is 8 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Feeling of warmth or flushing
  • Irritation or redness at the injection site
RARE
  • Chest pain, slow or irregular heartbeat
  • Severe allergic reaction: itchy rash, swelling of eyelids, face, lips, mouth, or tongue
  • Sudden chest pain or a tight feeling in the chest
  • Low blood pressure (may cause weakness or dizziness)
  • Unusual body movements or tremors
  • Hiccups
  • Changes in liver function tests
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Blurred vision
  • Irregular heart rhythms (sometimes with sudden loss of consciousness)
  • Temporary blindness (usually returns within 20 minutes)
  • Severe rash, such as red spots or blisters under the skin (hives)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to ondansetron, similar medicines, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are taking apomorphine for Parkinson's disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have been allergic to other anti-nausea medicines, such as granisetron or palonosetron.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a bowel obstruction or severe constipation, as Ondansetron can slow down digestion.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems.

  • Tell your doctor if you have had a tonsillectomy.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, such as an irregular heartbeat, as this medicine can affect the heart's electrical activity.
  • Tell your doctor if you have abnormal blood salt levels (potassium, sodium, magnesium).
  • Do not use during the first three months of pregnancy as it may slightly increase the risk of your baby being born with a cleft lip or palate. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant.
  • Do not breastfeed while using this medicine, as the drug can pass into breast milk.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific cautions. May prolong the QT interval especially with other preparations prolonging QT. Take interactions into account. (updated 20.5.2024)
