How to Use

Dosage

A doctor or nurse will usually give you an 8 mg dose by injection right before your treatment, and another 8 mg dose 12 hours later.

Method

This medicine is always given as an injection (shot) into a vein or muscle by a healthcare professional.

Important

The maximum dose you can take in a day is usually 16 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Feeling warm or flushed
  • Constipation
  • Irritation and redness at the injection site
RARE
  • Chest pain, irregular or slow heartbeats
  • Serious allergic reactions (like itching, rash, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or tongue)
  • Sudden chest pain or tightness
  • Seizures or fits
  • Unusual body movements or shaking
  • Low blood pressure, causing dizziness or feeling faint
  • Hiccups
  • Changes in liver function test results
  • Dizziness or feeling lightheaded
  • Blurred vision
  • Heart rhythm disturbances that can cause fainting
  • Temporary vision loss or poor vision (usually goes away within 20 minutes)
  • Severe skin rash with blisters and peeling skin (like a serious burn)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to ondansetron, similar medicines, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are taking apomorphine (a medicine for Parkinson's disease).
  • Tell your doctor if you have a blocked bowel or severe constipation, as this medicine can slow down bowel movements.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems. Your liver function will be checked closely.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had heart problems, including irregular heartbeats. This medicine can affect your heart rhythm.

  • Tell your doctor if you are having tonsil surgery, as this medicine might hide signs of internal bleeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you have problems with salt levels in your blood (like potassium or magnesium).
  • Do not use during the first three months of pregnancy, as it may slightly increase the risk of your baby being born with a cleft lip or palate. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
  • Do not use while breastfeeding, as ondansetron passes into breast milk.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience sudden chest pain or tightness in the chest.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C
