How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide your dose, which is usually 4 mg or 8 mg for adults as a single dose, and for children, the dose is based on their weight or size.

Method

This medicine is usually given as an injection into a vein or a muscle.

Important

For adults, the maximum daily dose is usually 8 mg, especially if you have liver problems. For children, the maximum dose varies but is generally no more than 4 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Feeling flushed or warm
  • Constipation
  • Changes in liver function tests
  • Irritation at the injection site (e.g., pain, burning, swelling, redness, itching)
RARE
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Unusual body movements or shaking (dyskinesia)
  • Muscle movement problems (dystonia)
  • Irregular or slow heartbeats
  • Chest pain
  • Fixed eye gaze
  • Low blood pressure, causing dizziness or fainting
  • Hiccups
  • Increased liver enzymes (seen in blood tests)
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Dizziness or feeling confused during fast intravenous injection
  • Temporary vision problems (e.g., blurred or double vision)
  • Heart rhythm disturbances (sometimes leading to fainting)
  • Diarrhea and stomach pain
  • Very severe allergic reaction with fever, blistering, and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Poor vision or temporary blindness, usually lasting about 20 minutes
  • Fluid retention (swelling)
  • Rash and itching
  • Heart muscle ischemia (sudden chest pain or tightness)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are taking apomorphine (a medicine for Parkinson's disease).
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to ondansetron, any other ingredients in this medicine, or similar medicines like granisetron or palonosetron.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had heart problems, such as an irregular heartbeat.
  • Tell your doctor if you have bowel problems.
  • Do not use Ondansetron Accord during the first three months of pregnancy as it may slightly increase the risk of a baby being born with a cleft lip and/or palate.

  • Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medicine, as it may pass into breast milk and affect your baby.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which may include sudden wheezing, chest pain, swelling of the face, rash, or fainting. Stop using this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific cautions. May prolong the QT interval especially with other preparations prolonging QT. Take interactions into account. (updated 20.5.2024)
