How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the typical dose for heartburn and acid reflux is 20 mg once a day for 4-8 weeks.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with half a glass of water, preferably in the morning on an empty stomach; do not chew or crush them.

Important

Your doctor might prescribe up to 40 mg daily for certain conditions, and up to 60 mg daily for rarer cases; always follow your doctor's instructions.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach and bowel problems like diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, and gas
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Benign stomach polyps (growths that are not cancer)
RARE
  • Swelling in feet and ankles
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Dizziness, tingling, drowsiness, or spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Skin rash, hives, and itchy skin
  • Feeling generally unwell or lacking energy
  • Feeling agitated, confused, or depressed
  • Vision problems (blurred vision)
  • Dry mouth or mouth inflammation (stomatitis)
  • Hair loss
  • Skin rash from sunlight exposure
  • Joint pain or muscle pain
  • Increased sweating
  • Aggression
  • Hallucinations (seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there)
  • Enlarged breasts in men
  • Low magnesium levels in the blood, which can cause tiredness, muscle twitches, confusion, seizures, dizziness, and a fast heart rate
  • Inflammation in the bowel causing diarrhea

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking Omestad and call your doctor right away if you get sudden wheezing, swelling of your lips, tongue, mouth or throat, skin rash, fainting, or trouble swallowing. These could be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop red skin with blisters or peeling, especially around the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, and genitals, possibly with fever and joint pain. These could be serious skin conditions.
  • Tell your doctor if your skin turns yellow, your urine gets dark, or you feel tired, as these can be signs of liver problems.
  • If you have severe or lasting diarrhea, unexplained weight loss, trouble swallowing, stomach pain, indigestion, start vomiting food or blood, or have black (bloody) stools, contact your doctor right away as Omestad can hide symptoms of other conditions.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
