How to Use

Dosage

Usually, adults take 20 mg once a day for 4-8 weeks, but your doctor will tell you the exact dose and how long to take it.

Method

Take the capsules whole with half a glass of water, preferably in the morning before eating. Do not chew or crush the capsules.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose, which can vary depending on your condition, but do not exceed what they prescribe.

Possible Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Stomach and gut issues: diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, gas
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Small, non-cancerous growths in the stomach
RARE
  • Swelling of feet and ankles
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Dizziness, tingling, drowsiness
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Changes in blood tests for liver function
  • Rash, hives, and itchy skin
  • General feeling of being unwell and lack of energy
  • Changes in blood cell counts, like fewer white blood cells or platelets
  • Allergic reactions, sometimes severe, with swelling of lips, tongue, throat, fever, or wheezing
  • Low levels of sodium in the blood
  • Feeling agitated, confused, or depressed
  • Taste changes
  • Vision problems, like blurred vision
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath (bronchospasm)
  • Dry mouth
  • Inflammation of the mouth (stomatitis)
  • Oral thrush (yeast infection in the mouth or gut)
  • Liver problems, including jaundice (yellow skin, dark urine, tiredness)
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Rash from sunlight
  • Joint pain (arthralgia) or muscle pain (myalgia)
  • Severe kidney problems (interstitial nephritis)
  • Increased sweating
  • Very rare changes in blood counts, including lack of white blood cells (agranulocytosis)
  • Aggression
  • Hallucinations (seeing, feeling, or hearing things that aren't there)
  • Severe liver problems leading to liver failure or brain inflammation
  • Sudden severe skin rash with blisters or peeling, possibly with high fever and joint pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Enlarged breasts in men
  • Inflammation in the gut causing diarrhea
  • Rash, possibly with joint pain

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking Omestad and call a doctor right away if you get sudden wheezing, swelling of your lips, tongue, throat, or body, rash, fainting, or trouble swallowing.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience red, blistering, or peeling skin, especially around the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, and genitals, possibly with fever and joint pain.
  • Contact your doctor if your skin turns yellow, your urine becomes dark, and you feel tired, as these can be signs of liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you lose a lot of weight for no reason, have trouble swallowing, get stomach pain or indigestion, start vomiting food or blood, or have black stools.
  • If you use Omestad for a long time (over a year), it might slightly increase your risk of bone fractures. Tell your doctor if you have weak bones (osteoporosis) or take steroid medicines.

  • If you take Omestad for more than three months, your magnesium levels might drop. Symptoms can include tiredness, muscle twitches, confusion, seizures, dizziness, or a fast heartbeat. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice these.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
