How to Use

Dosage

Typical dosage for adults is 20 mg once daily.

Method

Take the capsules whole with half a glass of water in the morning, with or without food. Do not chew or crush them. If you have trouble swallowing, open the capsule and mix the contents with a little acidic liquid like fruit juice or applesauce, then drink immediately without chewing the solid parts.

Important

Do not take more than 40 mg in a single day unless your doctor tells you to.

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach problems like diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, or gas
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
  • Small growths in the stomach (benign polyps)
RARE
  • Swelling of the feet and ankles
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Dizziness, tingling, numbness, or drowsiness
  • Skin rash, hives, or itching
  • General feeling of unwellness or lack of energy
  • Changes in liver function blood tests
  • Joint pain or muscle pain
  • Hair loss

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you get a severe allergic reaction, such as sudden wheezing, swelling of your lips, tongue, or throat, rash, or fainting.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any skin redness, blistering, or peeling, especially around your lips, eyes, mouth, nose, or genitals, as these can be signs of severe skin reactions.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience unexplained weight loss, trouble swallowing, stomach pain, vomiting food or blood, black stools, severe or ongoing diarrhea, or severe liver problems.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
