How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how many capsules to take and for how long, depending on your condition and age.

Method

Take capsules whole with half a glass of water, preferably in the morning. You can take them with or without food. Do not chew or crush the capsules.

Important

The maximum daily dose is typically 60 mg for specific conditions; your doctor will determine your exact maximum.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach and bowel problems (diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, gas)
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
  • Benign stomach polyps
RARE
  • Swelling of the feet and ankles
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Dizziness, tingling, numbness, drowsiness
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Changes in blood tests for liver function
  • Skin rash, bumpy rash (hives), and itchy skin
  • General feeling of being unwell and lack of energy
  • Fractures of the wrist, hip, or spine
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., fewer white blood cells or platelets), leading to weakness, bruising, or infections
  • Low sodium in the blood, causing weakness, nausea (vomiting), and cramps
  • Feeling agitated, confused, or depressed
  • Changes in taste
  • Eyesight problems, such as blurred vision
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath (bronchospasm)
  • Dry mouth
  • Inflammation of the mouth
  • Fungal infection in the gut (thrush)
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Rash when exposed to sunlight
  • Joint pain (arthralgia) or muscle pain (myalgia)
  • Severe kidney problems (interstitial nephritis)
  • Increased sweating
  • Severe changes in blood cell counts, including lack of white blood cells (agranulocytosis)
  • Aggression
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Severe liver problems leading to liver failure or brain inflammation
  • Widespread red rash with many small blisters (erythema multiforme)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Enlarged breasts in men
  • Inflammation of the gut (causing diarrhea)
  • Low magnesium levels in the blood (hypomagnesemia). Long-term use (over 3 months) can lower magnesium. Symptoms include tiredness, involuntary muscle twitching, confusion, convulsions, dizziness, and fast heart rate. Contact your doctor if you experience these.
  • Rash with possible joint pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to omeprazole or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to other proton pump inhibitors (like pantoprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, esomeprazole).
  • Do not use if you are taking nelfinavir (a medicine for HIV infection).
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor immediately if you notice any signs of serious skin reactions like red skin with blisters, peeling skin, or widespread rash with fever.
  • This medicine can hide symptoms of other diseases. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, stomach pain, vomiting blood, black stools, severe diarrhea, liver problems, or low vitamin B12 levels.

  • Long-term use (over a year) may slightly increase the risk of hip, wrist, or spine fractures.
  • Kidney inflammation may occur. Watch for symptoms like reduced urine, blood in urine, fever, rash, or joint pain, and contact your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
