How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your dose based on your blood sugar levels; the starting dose is usually 1 mg glimepiride per day, and it can be gradually increased if needed.

Method

Take the tablets with at least half a glass of water, the entire daily dose at once, before or during a substantial breakfast. Do not skip meals, and do not break the tablet.

Important

The recommended maximum daily dose is 6 mg glimepiride (equivalent to two Oltar 3 mg tablets).

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Severe low blood sugar, which may include unconsciousness, convulsions, or coma.
  • Reduced blood cell counts (platelets, white blood cells, red blood cells), which can increase the risk of bleeding, bruising, or infection, or cause paleness, weakness, or breathing difficulties.
  • Abnormal liver function, such as jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes), bile flow problems, hepatitis, or liver failure.
  • Severe allergic reactions, including blood vessel inflammation and rash, which can lead to breathing difficulties, a drop in blood pressure, and sometimes shock.
  • Skin hypersensitivity reactions, such as itching, rash, hives, and increased sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, feeling of fullness or swollen stomach, abdominal discomfort or pain.
  • Low sodium levels in the blood (detected by blood tests).
  • Vision disturbances at the start of treatment due to changes in blood sugar levels, usually resolving quickly.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in the blood.
  • Weight gain.
  • Hair loss.
  • Taste disturbances.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to glimepiride, other similar medicines (sulfonylureas and sulfonamides), or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take if you have type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent diabetes).
  • Do not take if you have ketoacidosis (increased acidity in the body) or diabetic coma (unconsciousness due to very high blood sugar).
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney or liver problems that require insulin treatment.
  • Talk to your doctor about the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially at the beginning of treatment.

  • Do not use Oltar if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor if you are planning a pregnancy or become pregnant.
  • Alcohol can unpredictably strengthen or weaken Oltar's blood sugar lowering effect.
