How to Use

Dosage

The typical starting dose is 1 mg (half of an Oltar 2 mg tablet) once a day, and your doctor may adjust the dose as needed.

Method

Take the tablet whole with at least half a glass of water, usually once a day just before or during a substantial breakfast. Do not skip meals.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose is 6 mg of glimepiride (three Oltar 2 mg tablets).

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Severe low blood sugar, which may include loss of consciousness, seizures, or coma.
  • Liver problems, such as yellow skin and eyes (jaundice), bile flow issues, liver inflammation, or liver failure.
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as blood vessel inflammation (often with rash), breathing difficulties, drop in blood pressure, and shock.
  • Skin allergies, such as itching, rash, hives, and sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Decrease in blood cell counts, such as platelets (increased bleeding risk), white blood cells (increased infection risk), or red blood cells (pale skin, weakness).
  • Weight gain, hair loss, taste changes.
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating or discomfort in the stomach, stomach pain.
  • Decreased sodium levels in the blood (seen in blood tests).
  • Vision problems may occur at the start of treatment and usually clear up quickly.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to glimepiride, similar medicines (sulfonylureas, sulfonamides), or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis (high acid levels in your body), or diabetic coma.
  • If you have severe kidney or liver problems, you might need insulin treatment.
  • Be careful about low blood sugar, especially when starting treatment. Monitor for symptoms.
  • Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor if you are planning to become pregnant.
