How to Use

Dosage

Start with 1 mg once a day. Your doctor will adjust the dose as needed, usually increasing it slowly every 1-2 weeks. The highest daily dose is 6 mg (six Oltar 1 mg tablets).

Method

Take the tablet whole with at least half a glass of water. Usually, take it once a day, just before or during a big breakfast. If you don't eat breakfast, take it at the time your doctor tells you. It's important to eat all your meals while taking this medicine.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Severe low blood sugar, which can cause fainting, seizures, or coma.
  • Liver problems, including yellow skin/eyes (jaundice), bile flow issues, liver inflammation (hepatitis), or liver failure.
  • Allergic reactions, including inflamed blood vessels often with a rash, which can become severe and cause breathing difficulties, a drop in blood pressure, and sometimes shock.
  • Fewer blood cells, leading to: lower platelet count (higher risk of bleeding/bruising), lower white blood cell count (higher risk of infections), lower red blood cell count (pale skin, weakness, or trouble breathing).
  • Weight gain.
  • Hair loss.
  • Changes in taste.
  • Nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, feeling full or bloated, stomach discomfort and pain.
  • Lower sodium levels in the blood (seen in blood tests).
  • Skin allergy (hypersensitivity) with symptoms such as itching, rash, hives, and increased sensitivity to sunlight. Some mild allergic reactions can become severe.
  • Vision problems may occur at the beginning of treatment due to changes in blood sugar levels, but usually resolve quickly.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in the blood.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Oltar if you are allergic to glimepiride or similar medicines (like sulfonylureas, sulfonamides), or any other ingredients in Oltar.
  • Do not take Oltar if you have type 1 diabetes, a condition called ketoacidosis (too much acid in your body), or if you are in a diabetic coma.
  • If you have severe kidney or liver problems, you might need to start insulin treatment instead of Oltar. Talk to your doctor.
  • It is very important to follow your doctor's instructions for diet, exercise, and weight loss, and to check your blood sugar regularly.
  • The risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can be higher during the first few weeks of treatment. Your doctor will watch you carefully.

  • Always carry a form of sugar with you (like glucose tablets or sugar cubes) to treat low blood sugar. Artificial sweeteners do not work.
  • Do not stop taking Oltar without talking to your doctor. Stopping could make your diabetes worse.
  • This medicine can affect your ability to drive or use machines, especially if your blood sugar is too low or too high. Be careful and discuss any concerns with your doctor.
  • Do not use Oltar if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Alcohol can change your blood sugar levels in unexpected ways when you take Oltar.
  • If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars (like lactose), talk to them before taking this medicine.
