How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is one 10 mg tablet once a day; your doctor may increase it to 20 mg or 40 mg daily. For mild to moderate kidney issues, the maximum is 20 mg once daily.

Method

Take the tablet with a glass of water, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day, for example, with breakfast.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 40 mg, but no more than 20 mg for patients with kidney problems.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, tiredness
  • Headache
  • Stomach upset (nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, pain, gut inflammation)
  • Cold-like symptoms (sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, bronchitis, cough, flu-like symptoms)
  • Body pain (chest, back, bones, joints)
  • Urinary problems (urinary tract infection, blood in urine)
  • Swelling in ankles, legs, feet, hands, or arms
  • Changes in blood tests (e.g., higher fat, uric acid, urea, liver or muscle enzyme levels)
RARE
  • Sudden severe allergic reactions (breathing problems, rapid drop in blood pressure, fainting)
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Vomiting, feeling sick
  • Weakness
  • Muscle pain
  • Skin reactions (rash, allergic rash, itching, skin bumps, hives)
  • Chest pain due to lack of oxygen to the heart muscle (angina)
  • Low number of platelets in blood (thrombocytopenia)
  • Lack of energy
  • Muscle cramps
  • Kidney problems (worsening function, kidney failure)
  • Swelling in the intestines (intestinal angioedema) with stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • High potassium levels in blood (hyperkalemia) and increased kidney function markers

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to olmesartan medoxomil or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use if you are more than 3 months pregnant, as it can seriously harm your baby.
  • Do not take if your skin or eyes are yellow (jaundice), or if you have problems with bile flow (like gallstones).
  • Do not take if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are using another blood pressure medicine called aliskiren.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe, long-lasting diarrhea that causes significant weight loss.

  • Talk to your doctor if you get stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea after taking this medicine; do not stop taking it without your doctor's advice.
  • A big drop in blood pressure can cause a heart attack or stroke in some people; your doctor will check your blood pressure often.
  • If your face, mouth, or throat swells, or if you have itching and rash, stop the medicine and call your doctor right away.
  • If you feel very dizzy or faint, stop the medicine, call your doctor right away, and lie down.
  • If your eyes turn yellow, your urine gets dark, or your skin is itchy, call your doctor immediately.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
