How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your age, weight, and health condition. One bag is usually given over 12 to 24 hours.

Method

This medicine is given as a slow drip (infusion) into a vein. It can go into a vein in your arm or a larger vein in your chest. The medicine should be at room temperature before it is given.

Important

The most an adult weighing 70 kg can receive in a day is 2800 ml (about 2.8 liters). This amount gives 71g of protein, 210g of sugar, and 84g of fat. For children over 2 years old, the maximum daily dose is 45 ml per kilogram of body weight.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fast heart rate
  • Reduced appetite
  • Higher fat levels in your blood
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • High blood pressure
RARE
  • Allergic reactions such as sweating, fever, chills, headache, skin rash, itching, hot flashes, or trouble breathing.
  • The infusion leaking out of the vein into the surrounding tissue, causing pain, irritation, swelling, redness, or skin damage.
  • Vomiting
  • Problems processing fats (fat overload syndrome), which can cause fever, low red or white blood cells, low platelets, bleeding issues, very high fat levels in the blood, fat in the liver, liver problems, or confusion/coma.
  • Abnormal liver blood tests, problems with bile flow (cholestasis), enlarged liver, liver disease related to IV nutrition, or yellow skin/eyes (jaundice).
  • Small particles blocking blood vessels in the lungs, which can lead to a lung clot and breathing difficulties.
  • Low number of platelets in the blood.
  • Increased nitrogen levels in the blood.
  • Higher levels of liver enzymes.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Olimel Perifer if you are allergic to eggs, soy, peanuts, corn, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • This medicine is not for premature babies, newborns, or children under 2 years old.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney or liver problems, very high fat levels in your blood, high blood sugar, or high levels of certain body salts (like sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, or phosphate) in your blood.
  • If you feel pain, burning, swelling, or redness at the infusion site, or if the infusion leaks, tell your doctor or nurse right away. The infusion will be stopped.
  • Stop the infusion immediately if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as sweating, fever, chills, headache, a widespread rash, or trouble breathing.

  • Do not give this medicine at the same time as blood or certain antibiotics (like ceftriaxone, ampicillin, or fosphenytoin) in the same IV line, as this can cause harmful particles to form.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or think you might be, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.
