How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your needs, age, weight, and health.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion (drip) through a tube (catheter) into a large vein in your chest.

Important

The maximum daily dose will be determined by your doctor, usually 2800 ml for a 70 kg adult. Do not exceed 2.1 ml per kg per hour.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia)
  • Decreased appetite
  • High fat levels in blood (hypertriglyceridemia)
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
RARE
  • Allergic reactions, including sweating, fever, chills, headache, skin rash, or breathing difficulties.
  • Infusion leaking into surrounding tissue (extravasation) causing pain, irritation, swelling, redness/warmth, skin cell death, blisters, inflammation, hardened or tight skin at the infusion site.
  • Vomiting
  • Fat overload syndrome (a sudden worsening of health due to poor fat clearance, symptoms disappear when infusion is stopped).
  • Fever (symptom of fat overload syndrome)
  • Anemia (low red blood cells causing pale skin, weakness, shortness of breath) (symptom of fat overload syndrome)
  • Leukopenia (low white blood cells increasing infection risk) (symptom of fat overload syndrome)
  • Thrombocytopenia (low platelets increasing bruising/bleeding risk) (symptom of fat overload syndrome)
  • Blood clotting problems (symptom of fat overload syndrome)
  • Hyperlipidemia (high fat levels in blood) (symptom of fat overload syndrome)
  • Hepatomegaly (fat accumulation in the liver) (symptom of fat overload syndrome)
  • Poor liver function (symptom of fat overload syndrome)
  • Central nervous system symptoms (e.g., coma) (symptom of fat overload syndrome)
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Problems with bile flow (cholestasis)
  • Enlarged liver (hepatomegaly)
  • Liver disease related to intravenous nutrition
  • Jaundice (yellow skin or eyes)
  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia)
  • Increased nitrogen in blood (azotemia)
  • High liver enzymes
  • Formation of small particles that can block lung blood vessels, leading to blood clots and breathing difficulties.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to egg, soy, peanut, or corn proteins or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Not for premature babies, newborns, or children under 2 years old.
  • Do not use if your body cannot process certain amino acids, or if you have very high fat or sugar levels in your blood, or abnormally high levels of certain electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and/or phosphate).
  • Giving the infusion too quickly can be harmful or life-threatening.
  • Stop the infusion immediately if you have signs of an allergic reaction (sweating, fever, chills, headache, rash, or breathing difficulties).

  • Breathing problems may also be a sign of small particles blocking blood vessels in the lungs. Tell your doctor or nurse if you have trouble breathing.
  • Do not mix or give this medicine with the antibiotic ceftriaxone through the same line at the same time, as it contains calcium.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney or liver problems, blood clotting issues, adrenal gland problems, heart failure, lung disease, too much or too little fluid in your body, uncontrolled high blood sugar, severe metabolic acidosis, general infection (sepsis), or coma.
  • If the infusion site becomes painful, burning, or swollen, or if the infusion leaks, tell your doctor or nurse immediately. The infusion will be stopped and restarted in another vein.
  • Olimel N5E should only be given into a large vein in the chest.
