How to Use

Dosage

Take 5 mg to 20 mg once a day.

Method

Take the tablet whole with water, once a day, at the same time each day, with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 20 mg in a single day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain
  • Drowsiness
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin in the blood
  • Dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up, sometimes with a slow heartbeat
  • Changes in blood cell counts
  • Changes in blood fat levels
  • Temporary increase in liver enzymes
  • Increased sugar levels in blood and urine
  • Increased levels of uric acid in the blood
  • Increased levels of creatine phosphokinase in the blood
  • Increased appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Tremor (shaking)
  • Unusual movements (dyskinesia)
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Rash
  • Weakness
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Fluid retention leading to swelling of hands, ankles, or feet
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Sexual problems, such as decreased sex drive in men and women, or erection problems in men
RARE
  • Allergic reaction (e.g., swelling of mouth and throat, itching, rash)
  • New or worsening diabetes, sometimes with ketoacidosis (acid build-up in blood and urine) or coma
  • Seizures, especially if you have a history of epilepsy
  • Muscle stiffness and spasms (including eye movements)
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Speech problems
  • Stuttering
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bloated belly
  • Drooling
  • Memory loss or forgetfulness
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Hair loss
  • Missed or lighter periods
  • Breast changes in men and women, such as unusual milk production or breast enlargement
  • Blood clots in veins, especially in the legs (symptoms include swelling, pain, and redness in the leg). Clots can travel to the lungs, causing chest pain and breathing difficulty. Seek immediate medical help if you have these symptoms.
  • Lowering of body temperature
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Sudden, unexplained death
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), with severe stomach pain, fever, and vomiting
  • Liver disease, causing yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • Muscle disease with unexplained pain and aches
  • Long-lasting and painful erection
  • A serious condition with fever, fast breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness, and drowsiness
  • Severe allergic reactions (DRESS syndrome) which starts like flu with a rash on the face, then widespread rash, high fever, swollen lymph nodes, increased liver enzymes, and increased white blood cells (eosinophilia).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have a history of eye problems like glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • This medicine is not recommended for elderly patients with dementia due to serious side effects.
  • This medicine can cause unusual movements, especially in the face or tongue. Tell your doctor if this happens.
  • Very rarely, this medicine can cause a serious condition with fever, fast breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness, and drowsiness. Seek immediate medical help if you experience these symptoms.

  • Weight gain can occur. Your doctor should check your weight regularly.
  • This medicine can increase blood sugar and fat levels. Your doctor will do blood tests to check these regularly.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family has a history of blood clots, as this medicine can increase the risk.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have or have had a stroke, Parkinson's disease, prostate problems, paralytic ileus (bowel blockage), liver or kidney disease, blood problems, heart disease, diabetes, or epilepsy. Also mention if you know you have low salt due to severe diarrhea, vomiting, or using diuretics.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you very drowsy.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, talk to your doctor. Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine. If taken during late pregnancy, your baby might have symptoms like shaking or breathing issues; contact your doctor if this happens.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy. Do not drive or use machines if you feel drowsy. Talk to your doctor.
  • This medicine should not be used by patients under 18 years old.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, even if you feel better, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms like sweating, trouble sleeping, or anxiety. Your doctor may reduce your dose slowly.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
