How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the right dose. It is usually between 5 mg and 20 mg per day.

Method

Take your tablet once a day, at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow it whole with water.

Important

Do not take more than 20 mg in a single day unless your doctor tells you to.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain
  • Drowsiness or sleepiness
  • Increased levels of prolactin in the blood
  • Dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up from lying or sitting
  • Changes in blood cell counts or lipid (fat) levels
  • Temporary increase in liver enzyme levels
  • Increased blood or urine sugar levels
  • Increased uric acid or creatine kinase levels in the blood
  • Increased appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Tremor or shaking
  • Unusual movements (dyskinesia)
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Rash
  • Weakness or severe tiredness
  • Fluid retention leading to swelling in hands, ankles, or feet
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Sexual dysfunction, such as decreased libido or erectile dysfunction
RARE
  • Hypersensitivity (e.g., swelling of the mouth or throat, itching, rash)
  • Onset or worsening of diabetes, sometimes with ketoacidosis or coma
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Muscle stiffness or spasms (including eye movements)
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Speech difficulties
  • Stuttering
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Nosebleed
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Drooling
  • Memory loss or forgetfulness
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Hair loss
  • Absent or reduced menstruation
  • Breast changes in men and women, such as abnormal milk production or breast enlargement
  • Decreased body temperature
  • Heart rhythm disorders
  • Unexplained sudden death
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), causing severe stomach pain, fever, and vomiting
  • Liver disease, with yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes
  • Unexplained muscle pain or aches
  • Prolonged and/or painful erection
  • Blood clots in veins, especially in the legs (symptoms include swelling, pain, redness). These can travel to the lungs, causing chest pain and breathing difficulties. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
  • Severe allergic reactions (DRESS syndrome), starting with flu-like symptoms and facial rash, followed by widespread rash, high fever, swollen lymph nodes, and changes in blood tests.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to olanzapine or any of its ingredients. Signs of an allergic reaction can be rash, itching, swollen face or lips, or trouble breathing. If you get these, tell your doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had eye problems like glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • This medicine is not for older patients with dementia, as it can cause serious problems.
  • This medicine can cause unusual movements, especially of the face or tongue. Tell your doctor if this happens.
  • Seek medical help right away if you get a fever, fast breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, or feel very drowsy. These can be signs of a serious reaction.

  • Your doctor will check your weight, blood sugar, and fat levels regularly while you take this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has ever had blood clots, as this medicine can increase the risk of them.
  • Tell your doctor about any health problems you have or have had, such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, prostate issues, bowel blockage, liver or kidney disease, blood disorders, heart problems, diabetes, or epilepsy.
  • Tell your doctor if you know you have low salt levels in your body due to severe diarrhea, vomiting, or taking water pills (diuretics).
  • This medicine is not for people under 18 years old.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you very sleepy.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy. Do not drive or use machines if you feel drowsy.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, even if you feel better. Stopping suddenly can cause symptoms like sweating, trouble sleeping, shaking, anxiety, nausea, or vomiting. Your doctor may tell you to lower your dose slowly.

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
