How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe your dose, which is usually 5–20 mg per day.

Method

Take the tablets once a day, swallowed whole with water, with or without food.

Important

The maximum dose is 20 mg per day as directed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Unusual movements, especially of the face or tongue.
  • Weight gain.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Increased prolactin levels in blood.
  • Dizziness or fainting (with slow heart rate) when standing up, especially at the start of treatment.
  • Changes in blood cell counts and fat levels.
  • Temporary increase in liver enzymes.
  • Increased blood and urine sugar.
  • Increased uric acid and creatine phosphokinase.
  • Increased appetite.
  • Restlessness.
  • Tremor.
  • Uncontrolled movements (dyskinesia).
  • Constipation.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Rash.
  • Weakness.
  • Severe tiredness.
  • Fluid retention (swelling in hands, ankles, feet).
  • Fever.
  • Joint pain.
  • Sexual problems (decreased sex drive or erection problems).
RARE
  • Blood clots, especially in the legs (symptoms include swelling, pain, and redness in the legs), which can travel to the lungs causing chest pain and breathing difficulties. Seek immediate medical attention.
  • A combination of symptoms including fever, fast breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, and drowsiness (frequency unknown).
  • Hypersensitivity (e.g., swelling of mouth and throat, itching, rash).
  • Onset or worsening of diabetes, sometimes with ketoacidosis or coma.
  • Seizures (fits), usually if you have a history of epilepsy.
  • Muscle stiffness or spasms (including eye movements).
  • Restless legs syndrome.
  • Speech problems.
  • Stuttering.
  • Slow heart rate.
  • Sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Nosebleed.
  • Bloated abdomen.
  • Drooling.
  • Memory loss or forgetfulness.
  • Urinary incontinence.
  • Difficulty urinating.
  • Hair loss.
  • Absence or reduction of menstrual periods.
  • Breast changes in men and women (e.g., abnormal milk production or breast enlargement).
  • Drop in body temperature.
  • Abnormal heart rhythm.
  • Sudden unexplained death.
  • Pancreatitis (symptoms include severe stomach pain, fever, and vomiting).
  • Liver disease (symptoms include yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes).
  • Muscle disease with unexplained pain.
  • Prolonged and painful erection.
  • Severe allergic reactions like DRESS (Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms), which starts with flu-like symptoms and rash on the face, followed by widespread rash, high fever, swollen lymph nodes, high liver enzymes, and increased white blood cells (eosinophilia).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have a history of eye problems like certain types of glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • This medicine is not recommended for elderly patients with dementia due to serious side effects.
  • Medicines like this can cause unusual movements, especially of the face or tongue. Tell your doctor if this happens.
  • Rarely, this type of medicine can cause fever, fast breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, and drowsiness. If this happens, contact your doctor immediately.

  • Weight gain can occur. Your doctor will monitor your weight regularly.
  • High blood sugar and fat levels (triglycerides and cholesterol) have been observed. Your doctor will perform blood tests regularly.
  • Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has had blood clots, as this type of medicine has been linked to clot formation.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking Olanzapine Accord, as it can increase drowsiness.
  • Olanzapine Accord is not for use in patients under 18 years of age.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
