How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, typically between 5 mg and 20 mg per day.

Method

Take the tablet once a day, at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow it whole with water.

Important

Do not take more than 20 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain
  • Drowsiness or feeling sleepy
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin in the blood
  • Dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up
  • Uncontrolled movements, especially of the face or tongue
  • Changes in blood cell counts and fat levels
  • Temporary increase in liver enzymes
  • Increased blood sugar or sugar in your urine
  • Increased uric acid or creatinine kinase levels in the blood
  • Increased appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Tremor (shaking)
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Rash
  • Weakness or extreme tiredness
  • Fluid retention leading to swelling in hands, ankles, or feet
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Sexual problems, such as decreased sex drive in men and women, or erection problems in men
RARE
  • Blood clots in veins, especially in the legs (symptoms include swelling, pain, and redness), which can travel to the lungs and cause chest pain and breathing difficulty.
  • A severe reaction with fever, fast breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness, and feeling very drowsy or sleepy.
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity), such as swelling of the mouth and throat, itching, or rash.
  • New or worsened diabetes, sometimes with serious complications like ketoacidosis (acid build-up in blood) or coma.
  • Seizures (fits), especially if you have a history of epilepsy.
  • Muscle stiffness or spasms, including eye movements.
  • Restless legs syndrome (an irresistible urge to move the legs).
  • Speech problems or stammering.
  • Slow heart rate.
  • Sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Nosebleed.
  • Bloating.
  • Drooling.
  • Memory loss or forgetfulness.
  • Urinary incontinence or difficulty urinating.
  • Hair loss.
  • Missed or fewer menstrual periods, or breast changes in men and women, such as unusual milk production or breast growth.
  • Decreased body temperature.
  • Abnormal heart rhythm or sudden, unexplained death.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), with severe stomach pain, fever, and vomiting.
  • Liver disease, causing yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes.
  • Muscle disease causing unexplained pain and aches.
  • Prolonged and painful erection.
  • Severe allergic reactions like DRESS syndrome (Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms), starting with flu-like symptoms and rash, followed by widespread rash, high fever, swollen lymph nodes, and changes in blood tests.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have a history of certain eye problems, like glaucoma.
  • This medicine is not recommended for elderly patients with dementia due to serious side effects.
  • This medicine can cause unusual movements, especially of the face or tongue; tell your doctor if this happens.
  • Rarely, a serious reaction with fever, fast breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, and severe drowsiness can occur; seek immediate medical help if you experience these.

  • Weight gain may occur; monitor your weight regularly with your doctor.
  • High blood sugar and fat levels have been observed; your doctor will monitor these with blood tests.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family have a history of blood clots, as this type of medicine can cause them.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can cause increased drowsiness.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness; do not drive or use machines if you feel drowsy.
  • If you have a sugar intolerance (lactose), talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms like sweating, trouble sleeping, shaking, anxiety, nausea, or vomiting.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
