How to Use

Dosage

Typically 5 mg to 20 mg per day, as prescribed by your doctor.

Method

Take once a day by mouth, swallowing the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food.

Important

Do not take two doses on the same day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain
  • Drowsiness or feeling sleepy
  • Higher levels of a hormone called prolactin in the blood
  • Dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up from lying or sitting (may include a slow heartbeat at first)
  • Changes in blood tests for blood cells and fats
  • Temporarily increased liver enzyme levels (at the start of treatment)
  • Increased sugar levels in blood and urine
  • Higher levels of uric acid and a muscle enzyme called creatine phosphokinase in the blood
  • Increased appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Unusual movements (dyskinesia), especially of the face or tongue
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Rash on the skin
  • Weakness or extreme tiredness
  • Swelling caused by too much fluid in the body, often in the hands, ankles, or feet
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Problems with sexual function, like a lower sex drive or trouble getting an erection
RARE
  • Blood clots in veins, especially in the legs (symptoms include swelling, pain, and redness in the leg), which can travel to the lungs causing chest pain and breathing difficulties.
  • A serious syndrome including fever, fast breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness, and drowsiness.
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity), such as swelling of the mouth/throat, itching, or rash.
  • New or worse diabetes, which can sometimes lead to serious complications like ketoacidosis or coma.
  • Fits or seizures, especially if you've had them before.
  • Stiff or twitching muscles, including eye movements.
  • Restless legs syndrome, an urge to move your legs.
  • Speech difficulties or stuttering.
  • Sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Nosebleeds.
  • Abdominal bloating.
  • Drooling.
  • Memory loss or forgetfulness.
  • Urinary incontinence (trouble controlling urine).
  • Difficulty urinating.
  • Hair loss.
  • Missed or lighter periods.
  • Breast changes in men and women, such as unusual milk production or breast enlargement.
  • Decreased body temperature.
  • Abnormal heart rhythm.
  • Sudden, unexplained death.
  • Pancreatitis (swelling of the pancreas, a gland in your belly) with severe stomach pain, fever, and vomiting.
  • Liver problems, seen as yellow skin or eyes (jaundice).
  • Muscle weakness or pain that you can't explain.
  • Prolonged and painful erection.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredients in this medicine. If you notice symptoms like rash, itching, swelling of face or lips, or trouble breathing, contact your doctor.
  • Do not take if you have certain types of glaucoma (high pressure in the eye) that have been diagnosed before.
  • This medicine is not recommended for elderly patients with dementia due to serious side effects it can cause.
  • This medicine can cause unusual movements, especially in the face or tongue. If this happens after you start taking Olanzapine Accord, tell your doctor.
  • Rarely, this medicine can cause a serious condition with symptoms like fever, fast breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, and feeling very sleepy. If these symptoms occur, get medical help right away.

  • Weight gain can occur with this medicine. You and your doctor should regularly check your weight. A dietitian may help with a diet plan if needed.
  • High blood sugar and fat levels (triglycerides and cholesterol) can occur. Your doctor will check these with blood tests before and during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has a history of blood clots, as medicines like this can increase the risk of clots.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking Olanzapine Accord, as it can make you very sleepy.
  • This medicine can make you drowsy. Do not drive or use tools or machines if you feel drowsy, and tell your doctor about it.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine, as small amounts can pass into breast milk.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
