How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the right dose, usually between 5 mg and 20 mg per day.

Method

Take one tablet once a day by mouth with water, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 20 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain
  • Drowsiness
  • Increased prolactin levels in blood
  • Dizziness or fainting, slow heartbeat (especially when standing up from lying or sitting)
  • Changes in blood cell counts and fat levels
  • Temporary increase in liver enzymes, especially at the start of treatment
  • Increased blood and urine sugar levels
  • Increased uric acid and creatine phosphokinase levels in blood
  • Increased appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Tremor
  • Unusual movements (dyskinesia), especially of the face or tongue
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Rash
  • Weakness
  • Severe tiredness
  • Fluid retention, which may cause swelling of the hands, ankles or feet
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Sexual problems, such as decreased sex drive in men and women, or erection problems in men
RARE
  • Blood clots, especially in the legs (swelling, pain, redness), possibly leading to chest pain and breathing difficulties. Seek medical help immediately if you notice these symptoms.
  • Syndrome with fever, fast breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, and drowsiness. Seek medical help immediately if this happens.
  • Hypersensitivity (e.g., swelling of the mouth and throat, itching, rash)
  • Onset or worsening of diabetes, sometimes with ketoacidosis (ketones in blood and urine) or coma
  • Seizures (convulsions), generally in patients with a history of epilepsy
  • Muscle stiffness and spasms (including eye movements)
  • Restless legs syndrome (unpleasant sensations and an urge to move the legs at rest)
  • Speech difficulties
  • Stuttering
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Nosebleed
  • Bloated stomach
  • Drooling
  • Memory loss or forgetfulness
  • Urinary incontinence, difficulty urinating
  • Hair loss
  • Absent or reduced menstrual periods
  • Breast changes in men and women, such as abnormal milk production or breast enlargement
  • Decrease in normal body temperature
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Sudden, unexplained death
  • Inflammation of the pancreas, causing severe stomach pain, fever, and vomiting
  • Liver disease, causing yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes
  • Muscle disease, causing unexplained muscle pain and aches
  • Prolonged or painful erection
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as DRESS syndrome (flu-like symptoms, facial rash, widespread rash, high fever, swollen lymph nodes, increased liver enzymes, increased eosinophils). Seek medical help immediately if you notice these symptoms.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have certain eye problems, like glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • This medicine is not recommended for elderly patients with dementia due to serious side effects.
  • You might gain weight and experience high blood sugar or fat levels. Your doctor will monitor these with blood tests.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family have a history of blood clots, as this medicine can increase the risk.

  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you very sleepy.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel sleepy.
  • This medicine is not for patients under 18 years old.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor. Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without your doctor's advice, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms like sweating, trouble sleeping, or nausea.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a stroke, Parkinson's disease, prostate problems, bowel paralysis, liver or kidney disease, blood disorders, heart disease, diabetes, or epilepsy. Also, if you know you have salt deficiency or use diuretics.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially medicines for Parkinson's disease, carbamazepine, fluvoxamine, or ciprofloxacin, as your dose of Olanzapin Sandoz may need to be adjusted.
