How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, usually between 5 mg and 20 mg per day.

Method

Take one tablet by mouth once a day with water, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 20 mg. Do not take more than your doctor prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain
  • Feeling sleepy
  • Higher levels of a hormone called prolactin in your blood
  • Dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up from sitting or lying down; this can be with a slow heartbeat.
  • Changes in blood cell counts and fat levels in your blood
  • Temporary increase in liver enzymes
  • Increased blood sugar and sugar in your urine
  • Increased levels of uric acid and creatine phosphokinase in your blood
  • Increased appetite
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Feeling restless
  • Shaking (tremor)
  • Unusual, uncontrolled movements (dyskinesia)
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Skin rash
  • Feeling weak
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet due to fluid retention
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Sexual problems, like decreased sex drive in men and women, or erection problems in men.
  • Unusual movements, especially of the face or tongue
RARE
  • Allergic reaction (hypersensitivity), for example, swelling of the mouth and throat, itching, or rash.
  • Diabetes developing or getting worse, sometimes with high acid levels in the blood (ketoacidosis) or coma.
  • Seizures (fits), especially if you have a history of epilepsy.
  • Muscle stiffness and spasms, including eye movements.
  • Restless legs syndrome (an uncomfortable urge to move your legs while at rest).
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Stuttering
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Nosebleeds
  • Swollen stomach
  • Drooling
  • Memory loss or forgetfulness
  • Urinary problems like leaking urine or difficulty urinating
  • Hair loss
  • Missed or shorter periods in women
  • Breast changes in men and women, such as unusual milk production or breast enlargement.
  • Blood clots, especially in the legs (symptoms include swelling, pain, or redness). These can travel to the lungs, causing chest pain and trouble breathing.
  • Drop in normal body temperature
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Sudden, unexplained death
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), causing severe stomach pain, fever, and feeling sick.
  • Liver disease, causing yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes.
  • Muscle disease, causing unexplained muscle aches and pains.
  • A prolonged or painful erection.
  • A serious syndrome with symptoms like fever, rapid breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, and drowsiness.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredients in the tablet.
  • Do not take if you have certain eye problems, like high pressure in the eye (glaucoma).
  • This medicine is not for elderly patients with dementia, as it can cause serious side effects for them.
  • If you notice unusual movements, especially of your face or tongue, tell your doctor right away.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you get a fever, fast breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, or feel very sleepy.

  • You may gain weight, or your blood sugar and fat levels may increase. Your doctor will monitor these.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family has a history of blood clots, as this medicine can increase the risk.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you very drowsy.
  • This medicine is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to be, or breastfeeding.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy. Do not drive or operate machines if you feel drowsy.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
