How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose is 5 mg to 20 mg per day.

Method

Take one tablet once a day with water. You can take it with or without food, try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 20 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain
  • Drowsiness
  • Increased levels of prolactin (a hormone) in the blood
  • Dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up
  • Changes in blood cell counts and fat levels
  • Temporary increase in liver enzymes
  • Increased blood sugar and sugar in urine
  • Increased uric acid and creatine kinase in the blood
  • Increased appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Tremor (shaking)
  • Unusual movements, especially of the face or tongue
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Rash
  • Weakness
  • Severe tiredness
  • Fluid retention causing swelling in hands, ankles, or feet
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Sexual problems, like reduced sex drive or erection problems
RARE
  • Blood clots, especially in the legs (swelling, pain, redness), which can travel to the lungs causing chest pain and breathing difficulties.
  • Allergic reactions, like swelling of the mouth and throat, itching, or rash.
  • New or worsening diabetes, sometimes with serious complications like acid poisoning or coma.
  • Seizures (fits), especially if you have a history of epilepsy.
  • Stiff muscles and muscle spasms (including eye movements).
  • Restless legs syndrome.
  • Speech difficulties.
  • Stuttering.
  • Slow heartbeat.
  • Sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Nosebleed.
  • Bloated stomach.
  • Drooling.
  • Memory loss or forgetfulness.
  • Inability to control urination or difficulty urinating.
  • Hair loss.
  • Missed or light periods.
  • Breast changes in men and women, such as abnormal milk production or breast enlargement.
  • Lowered body temperature.
  • Irregular heartbeat.
  • Sudden, unexplained death.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), causing severe stomach pain, fever, and vomiting.
  • Liver disease, causing yellowing of skin and eyes.
  • Muscle disease causing unexplained muscle aches and pains.
  • Prolonged or painful erection.
  • Severe allergic reaction called DRESS (Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms) with flu-like symptoms, rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes.
  • (For newborns of mothers who used this medicine during late pregnancy) Tremors, muscle stiffness or weakness, drowsiness, restlessness, breathing or feeding difficulties.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you have certain types of glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • This medicine is not recommended for elderly patients with dementia due to serious side effects.
  • If you experience fever, fast breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, and drowsiness, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Your doctor will regularly check your weight, blood sugar, and fat levels, as these can change with this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you or a family member has a history of blood clots, as this medicine can increase the risk.

  • This medicine is not for patients under 18 years of age.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you more drowsy.
  • Do not breastfeed while using this medicine, as small amounts can pass into breast milk and affect your baby.
  • This medicine may cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy or dizzy.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
