How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the right dose, usually between 5 mg and 20 mg daily.

Method

Take one tablet once a day, with or without food, at the same time each day. You can place the tablet in your mouth to dissolve or mix it in water, juice, milk, or coffee and drink immediately. Handle with dry hands as tablets are fragile.

Important

Do not take more than 20 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

  • Weight gain
  • Drowsiness
  • Increased prolactin levels in blood
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness (slow heartbeat) when standing up
  • Unusual movements, especially of the face or tongue
  • Changes in blood cell counts and fat levels in blood
  • Temporary increase in liver enzymes
  • Increased blood sugar and sugar in urine
  • Increased uric acid and creatine phosphokinase levels in blood
  • Increased appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Tremor
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Rash

  • Severe tiredness
  • Fluid retention (swelling in hands, ankles, or feet)

RARE
  • Allergic reaction (swelling of mouth/throat, itching, rash)
  • New or worse diabetes (acid buildup, coma)
  • Seizures
  • Stiff muscles and spasms (including eye movements)
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Speech problems
  • Stuttering
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Nosebleed
  • Bloating
  • Drooling
  • Memory problems or forgetfulness
  • Incontinence
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Hair loss
  • Missed or irregular periods
  • Breast changes in men/women (unusual milk production or breast enlargement)
  • Blood clot (especially in leg veins)
  • Fever, fast breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, confusion/sleepiness
  • Drop in body temperature
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Sudden unexplained death
  • Pancreatitis (severe stomach pain, fever, vomiting)
  • Liver disease (yellow skin and eyes)
  • Muscle disease (unexplained pain)
  • Prolonged or painful erection
  • Severe allergic reactions (flu-like symptoms, rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, high liver enzymes, high eosinophil count)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have certain types of glaucoma (high pressure in your eye).
  • This medicine is not recommended for elderly patients with dementia due to serious side effects.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you experience unusual movements, especially of the face or tongue.
  • Seek medical help right away if you have a fever, fast breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, and feel confused or very sleepy.

  • Your weight should be checked regularly, as this medicine can cause weight gain.
  • This medicine can increase blood sugar and fat levels. Your doctor will do blood tests before and during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has had blood clots, as this medicine can increase the risk.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you very sleepy.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine. Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel sleepy.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
