How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe your dose, usually 5-20 mg of olanzapine daily.

Method

Take the tablet once daily whole with water, at the same time each day, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 20 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Increased prolactin levels in blood.
  • Dizziness or faintness, especially when standing up, at the start of treatment.
  • Changes in blood values (blood cells, sugar levels, fat levels).
  • Increased appetite.
  • Restlessness.
  • Tremors.
  • Unusual movements (dyskinesia).
  • Constipation.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Rash.
  • Weakness or fatigue.
  • Fluid retention in the body, which can cause swelling in hands, ankles, or feet.
  • Fever.
  • Joint pain.
  • Sexual problems, such as decreased libido or erectile dysfunction.
RARE
  • Allergic reactions, such as swelling of the mouth or throat, itching, rash.
  • New or worsening diabetes, possibly with ketoacidosis (ketones in blood and urine) or coma.
  • Seizures.
  • Muscle stiffness or spasms, including eye movements.
  • Restless legs syndrome.
  • Speech difficulties, stuttering.
  • Slow heart rate.
  • Sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Nosebleeds.
  • Bloating.
  • Drooling.
  • Memory problems or forgetfulness.
  • Inability to urinate or difficulty passing urine.
  • Hair loss.
  • Missed or light periods.
  • Breast changes, such as unusual milk production or breast enlargement in men and women.
  • Decrease in body temperature.
  • Abnormal heart rhythm.
  • Unexplained sudden death.
  • Pancreatitis, with symptoms like severe stomach pain, fever, and vomiting.
  • Liver disease, which can cause yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes.
  • Muscle disease causing unexplained aches and pains.
  • Prolonged and/or painful erection.
  • Severe allergic reactions (DRESS syndrome), with flu-like symptoms, rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and changes in blood tests.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take if you have a history of certain eye conditions like glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • Not recommended for elderly patients with dementia due to the risk of serious side effects.
  • Tell your doctor if you experience unusual movements, especially of the face or tongue.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop fever, fast breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness, or drowsiness.

  • Inform your doctor if you or a family member has a history of blood clots.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can increase drowsiness.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are breastfeeding, and talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness; do not drive or operate machinery if you feel sleepy.
