How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose of olanzapine is 5-20 mg per day.

Method

Take one tablet once a day. Try to take your tablets at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 20 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain
  • Drowsiness
  • Increased prolactin levels in the blood
  • Dizziness or faintness, especially when standing up, which often resolves on its own
RARE
  • Changes in blood cell and fat levels
  • Increased blood and urine sugar levels
  • Increased uric acid and creatine phosphokinase levels in blood
  • Increased appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Tremor
  • Unusual movements (dyskinesia)
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Rash
  • Weakness
  • Severe tiredness
  • Fluid retention causing swelling in hands, ankles, or feet
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Sexual problems, like reduced libido or erectile dysfunction
  • Hypersensitivity (e.g., swelling of mouth and throat, itching, rash)
  • Onset or worsening of diabetes, sometimes with ketoacidosis or coma
  • Seizures (epilepsy), generally in patients with a history of seizures
  • Muscle stiffness or spasms (including eye movements)
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Speech difficulties, stuttering
  • Slow heart rate
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Nosebleeds
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Drooling
  • Memory problems or forgetfulness
  • Urinary incontinence, difficulty urinating
  • Hair loss
  • Absent or reduced menstruation
  • Breast changes in men and women, such as abnormal milk production or enlargement
  • Decreased body temperature
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Sudden, unexplained death
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), symptoms include severe stomach pain, fever, and vomiting
  • Liver disease causing yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • Muscle disease causing unexplained muscle pain and aches
  • Prolonged and/or painful erection
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., DRESS syndrome) starting with flu-like symptoms and rash, followed by widespread rash, high fever, swollen lymph nodes, increased liver enzymes, and increased white blood cells.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to olanzapine or any of its other ingredients, or if you have certain types of glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • This medicine is not recommended for elderly patients with dementia as it can cause serious side effects.
  • If you experience unusual movements, especially of the face or tongue, tell your doctor immediately.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop symptoms like fever, rapid breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness, and drowsiness.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can increase drowsiness.

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before taking this medicine. It is not recommended during breastfeeding.
