Olanzapin ratiopharm is an antipsychotic medicine used to treat schizophrenia, severe manic episodes, and to prevent recurrence of symptoms in bipolar disorder.

How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose is 5-20 mg of olanzapine per day.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth once daily, whole with water, with or without food. Try to take them at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 20 mg, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain
  • Drowsiness or feeling sleepy
  • Increased levels of prolactin in the blood
  • Dizziness or feeling faint, especially when standing up, sometimes with a slow heartbeat
  • Changes in blood cell and fat levels, and temporary increase in liver enzymes
  • Increased blood and urine sugar levels
  • Increased levels of uric acid and creatine phosphokinase in the blood
  • Increased appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Tremor (shaking)
  • Unusual movements (like muscle spasms)
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Rash
  • Weakness
  • Severe tiredness
  • Fluid retention leading to swelling in hands, ankles, or feet
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Sexual problems, such as decreased sex drive or erection problems
RARE
  • Allergic reactions like swelling of the mouth/throat, itching, or rash
  • New or worsening diabetes, sometimes with severe complications like ketoacidosis (ketones in blood and urine) or coma
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Muscle stiffness or spasms, including eye movements
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Speech problems or stammering
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Nosebleed
  • Bloating of the stomach
  • Drooling
  • Memory loss or forgetfulness
  • Inability to urinate or difficulty urinating
  • Hair loss
  • Missed or shortened menstrual periods
  • Breast changes in men and women, such as abnormal milk production or enlargement
  • Lowered body temperature
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Sudden, unexplained death
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), causing severe stomach pain, fever, and feeling unwell
  • Liver disease, causing yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes
  • Muscle disease, causing unexplained aches and pains
  • Prolonged and/or painful erection
  • Severe allergic reactions (DRESS), starting with flu-like symptoms, facial rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, high liver enzymes, and increased white blood cells (eosinophils)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredient in it. Signs of allergy can be rash, itching, swelling of face or lips, or trouble breathing. Contact your doctor if this happens.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have certain types of glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • This medicine is not recommended for elderly patients with dementia due to serious side effects.
  • This type of medicine can cause unusual movements, especially of the face or tongue. Tell your doctor if this happens.
  • Rarely, this type of medicine can cause a group of symptoms including fever, fast breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness, and severe drowsiness. If this happens, contact your doctor immediately.

  • You may gain weight, or have high blood sugar or fat levels (triglycerides, cholesterol) while taking this medicine. Your doctor will monitor these regularly.
  • Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has had blood clots, as this type of medicine has been linked to clot formation.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have or have had a stroke, Parkinson's disease, prostate problems, bowel obstruction, liver or kidney disease, blood disorders, heart disease, diabetes, or seizures, or if you have severe diarrhea or vomiting or use diuretics.
  • If you are over 65, your doctor should check your blood pressure regularly.
  • This medicine is not for patients under 18 years of age.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you very sleepy.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before taking this medicine. Small amounts can pass into breast milk.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy.
  • This medicine contains lactose. If you have an intolerance to some sugars, talk to your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
