How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe your dose, usually between 5-20 mg per day.

Method

Take your tablet once a day with water, whole, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 20 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain
  • Drowsiness
  • Increased prolactin levels in the blood
  • Dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up, sometimes with a slow heart rate (initial treatment)
  • Involuntary movements, especially of the face or tongue
  • Changes in blood cell and fat levels, temporary increase in liver enzymes
  • Increased blood and urine sugar levels
  • Increased uric acid and creatine phosphokinase levels in the blood
  • Increased appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Tremors
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Rash
  • Weakness
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Fluid retention causing swelling in hands, ankles, or feet
  • Fever
  • Joint pain and sexual problems like decreased libido in men and women, or erectile dysfunction in men
RARE
  • Blood clots in veins (e.g., leg swelling, pain, redness), potentially leading to chest pain or breathing difficulties
  • Syndrome with fever, rapid breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness, and drowsiness
  • Hypersensitivity (e.g., swelling of mouth and throat, itching, rash)
  • Onset or worsening of diabetes, sometimes with ketoacidosis or coma
  • Seizures, usually in patients with a history of epilepsy
  • Muscle stiffness and spasms (including eye movements)
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Speech difficulties
  • Stammering
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bloated abdomen
  • Drooling
  • Memory loss or forgetfulness
  • Urinary incontinence, difficulty urinating
  • Hair loss
  • Missed or irregular periods, and breast changes in men and women (e.g., abnormal milk production or breast enlargement)
  • Decrease in normal body temperature
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Sudden, unexplained death
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) causing severe stomach pain, fever, and vomiting
  • Liver disease, with yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes
  • Muscle disorder with unexplained aches and pains
  • Prolonged or painful erection

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have certain eye problems like glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye).
  • This medicine is not recommended for elderly patients with dementia, as it can cause serious side effects.
  • This medicine may cause unusual movements of the face or tongue; tell your doctor if this happens.
  • In rare cases, this medicine can cause a syndrome with fever, fast breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness, and drowsiness; seek immediate medical attention if this occurs.

  • Weight gain can occur; your weight should be regularly monitored by your doctor.
  • High blood sugar and fat levels can occur; your doctor will monitor these with blood tests before and during treatment.
  • Inform your doctor if you or a family member has a history of blood clots, as this medicine can be associated with blood clot formation.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have diabetes, heart disease, liver or kidney disease, Parkinson's disease, seizures, prostate problems, paralytic ileus, blood disorders, stroke, or if you are dehydrated.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can increase drowsiness.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness; do not drive or use machines if you feel drowsy.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms like sweating, trouble sleeping, tremors, anxiety, nausea, or vomiting. Your doctor may reduce the dose gradually.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
