How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose of Olanzapin Orion is 5–20 mg per day.

Method

Take one tablet once a day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 20 mg. Do not take more than your doctor prescribes.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain
  • Feeling sleepy
  • Higher levels of a hormone called prolactin in your blood
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded, especially when standing up, which might include a slow heartbeat
  • Changes in blood tests like altered blood cell counts, fat levels, and temporary increases in liver enzymes
  • Higher blood sugar in blood and urine, increased uric acid, and creatine phosphokinase
  • Increased appetite
  • Feeling restless
  • Shaking (tremor)
  • Abnormal movements, especially of the face or tongue
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Skin rash
  • Feeling weak or very tired
  • Fluid build-up leading to swelling in the hands, ankles, or feet
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Sexual problems, like decreased sex drive in men and women, or erection problems in men
RARE
  • Allergic reaction (hypersensitivity) with swelling of the mouth or throat, itching, or rash
  • New diabetes or worsening of existing diabetes, sometimes with serious complications like ketoacidosis or coma
  • Seizures (fits), especially in people who have had them before
  • Stiff muscles or muscle spasms, including eye movements
  • Restless legs syndrome (an uncomfortable urge to move the legs when resting)
  • Speech difficulties or stuttering
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bloating in the stomach area
  • Drooling
  • Memory loss or forgetfulness
  • Problems with urination, such as incontinence (leaking urine) or difficulty passing urine
  • Hair loss
  • Missed or fewer periods, and breast changes in men and women (like unusual milk production or breast growth)
  • Drop in body temperature
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Sudden, unexplained death
  • Pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis) with severe stomach pain, fever, and vomiting
  • Liver disease, shown by yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes
  • Muscle disease with unexplained aches and pains
  • Long-lasting or painful erection

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have a certain type of eye problem called glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • This medicine is not recommended for elderly patients with dementia due to serious side effects.
  • This medicine can cause unusual movements of the face or tongue. Tell your doctor if this happens.
  • In rare cases, this medicine can cause a serious condition with fever, fast breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, and drowsiness. If you notice these symptoms, contact your doctor right away.

  • Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has ever had blood clots, as these medicines can be linked to blood clot formation.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you very drowsy.
  • This medicine can make you drowsy. Do not drive or operate machines if you feel drowsy.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor.
  • Olanzapin Orion is not for use in patients under 18 years of age.
  • This medicine contains lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
