How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your dose, typically 5-20 mg daily.

Method

Take one tablet once a day with water, whole. You can take it with or without food, try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

Do not take more than 20 mg per day unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain
  • Drowsiness or feeling sleepy
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin in your blood
  • Dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up quickly (may cause slow heartbeat)
  • Changes in blood cell counts and fat levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Temporary increase in liver enzymes (seen in blood tests)
  • Increased blood sugar and sugar in your urine
  • Increased uric acid and creatine phosphokinase levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Increased appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Unusual movements (dyskinesia)
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Rash
  • Weakness
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Fluid retention, causing swelling in hands, ankles, or feet
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Sexual problems, such as decreased sex drive in men and women, or erection problems in men
RARE
  • Allergic reaction (e.g., swelling of mouth and throat, itching, rash)
  • New or worsening diabetes, sometimes with serious conditions like ketoacidosis or coma
  • Seizures (fits), especially if you have a history of epilepsy
  • Muscle stiffness or spasms (including eye movements)
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Speech problems
  • Stuttering
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bloating or swollen abdomen
  • Drooling
  • Memory loss or forgetfulness
  • Urinary incontinence or difficulty urinating
  • Hair loss
  • Missed or fewer periods, and breast changes in men and women (e.g., unusual milk production or breast enlargement)
  • Drop in body temperature
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Sudden, unexplained death
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (symptoms include severe stomach pain, fever, and vomiting)
  • Liver disease (symptoms include yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Muscle disease (symptoms include unexplained aches and pains)
  • Prolonged or painful erection

Important Warnings

  • This medicine is not recommended for elderly patients with dementia, as it can cause serious side effects.
  • If you experience unusual movements of your face or tongue, tell your doctor right away.
  • If you get a fever, fast breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, and drowsiness all at once, contact your doctor immediately. This is a rare but serious side effect.
  • You may gain weight while taking this medicine. Your doctor will monitor your weight regularly.
  • This medicine can affect your blood sugar and fat levels. Your doctor will do blood tests to check these.

  • Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has ever had blood clots, as this medicine can increase the risk.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredients. If you get a rash, itching, or swelling of your face or throat after starting, tell your doctor immediately.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have certain eye conditions, like glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you very drowsy.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness. Do not drive or use machines if you feel drowsy.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, even if you feel better. Your doctor will tell you how to gradually stop to avoid withdrawal symptoms like sweating, trouble sleeping, and nausea.
  • This medicine is not for patients under 18 years old.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
