How to Use

Dosage

Take 5-20 mg once daily as prescribed by your doctor.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth, with or without food, at the same time each day. Handle the tablet carefully as it dissolves easily. You can also dissolve it in a glass of water, juice, milk, or coffee and drink immediately.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 20 mg.

  • Weight gain
  • Drowsiness
  • Increased prolactin levels in blood
  • Changes in blood cell and fat levels; temporary increase in liver enzymes at the start of treatment
  • Increased sugar levels in blood and urine
  • Increased uric acid and creatine phosphokinase levels in blood
  • Increased appetite
  • Dizziness
  • Restlessness
  • Tremors
  • Unusual movements (dyskinesia)
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Rash
  • Weakness / Lack of energy
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Fluid retention and swelling of hands, ankles or feet
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Sexual problems like decreased sex drive in men and women, or erection problems in men
RARE
  • Allergic reactions like swelling of mouth/throat, itching, rash
  • New or worsening diabetes, sometimes with ketoacidosis (high acid levels in blood/urine) or coma
  • Seizures, especially if you have a history of them (epilepsy)
  • Muscle stiffness and spasms, including eye movements
  • Restless legs syndrome (unpleasant sensations and an urge to move the legs while at rest)
  • Speech problems
  • Stammering
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Nosebleed
  • Swollen abdomen
  • Drooling
  • Memory loss or forgetfulness
  • Urinary incontinence (loss of bladder control)
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Hair loss
  • Missed or fewer periods
  • Breast changes in men and women, e.g., abnormal milk production or breast enlargement
  • Decrease in normal body temperature
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Sudden, unexplained death
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), with severe stomach pain, fever, and vomiting
  • Liver disease with yellowing of skin and whites of eyes
  • Muscle disease with unexplained aches and pains
  • Prolonged or painful erection

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have certain types of eye problems, like glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy. Do not drive or use machines if you feel drowsy.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you more drowsy.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to be. Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine as it can pass into breast milk.

  • This medicine is not recommended for older patients with dementia because it can cause serious side effects for them.
  • This type of medicine can cause unusual movements, especially of the face or tongue. If this happens, tell your doctor.
  • Very rarely, this medicine can cause a combination of symptoms including fever, fast breathing, sweating, stiff muscles, and drowsiness. If you notice these, contact your doctor right away.
  • Weight gain has occurred in people taking this medicine. You and your doctor should check your weight regularly.
  • High blood sugar and fat levels (triglycerides and cholesterol) have been seen in people taking this medicine. Your doctor will do blood tests to check these regularly.
  • Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has ever had blood clots, as medicines like this can cause them.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
