Oftan Dexa

Oftan Dexa eye drops contain dexamethasone, a corticosteroid medicine that reduces inflammation, allergy symptoms, and pain in the eye, used for non-bacterial eye inflammations and after eye injuries or surgeries.

How to Use

Dosage

1-2 drops in one or both eyes, initially hourly, then 4-6 times a day.

Method

Wash your hands, tilt your head back, pull down your lower eyelid, drop one drop into your eye, then close your eye and press the inner corner for about a minute. Wait at least 5 minutes if using other eye drops.

Important

Maximum 12 drops per day (2 drops, 6 times a day).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Temporary stinging or burning in the eye.
  • Temporary blurred vision upon application of drops.
  • Eye irritation (from preservative).
  • Increased eye pressure (with long-term use).
RARE
  • Corneal ulcers or clouding (after several months of continuous use).
  • Blurred vision (general, not transient).
  • Hormonal problems, such as increased hair growth (especially in women), muscle weakness, purple stretch marks on the body, high blood pressure, irregular or absent periods, changes in body protein and calcium levels, slowed growth in children, and swelling or rounding of the face and body (Cushing's syndrome).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to dexamethasone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have eye tuberculosis.
  • Do not use if you have a viral or fungal eye infection.
  • Do not use if you have ulcers in your eyes.
  • Do not use if you have a purulent (pus-filled) eye infection without antibacterial medicine.

  • Contact a doctor if you experience blurred vision or other vision problems.
  • Long-term use (over two weeks) can increase eye pressure.
  • Healing of corneal injuries may be delayed.
  • Talk to your doctor if you experience swelling or rounding of your body and face, as these can be signs of Cushing's syndrome. Long-term use can also affect adrenal gland function.
  • Remove contact lenses before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, as the preservative can be absorbed by lenses and cause irritation.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For temporary use. Start and continue therapy under supervision by an ophthalmologist. Do not use if fungal or viral infection is suspected. (updated 4.12.2023)
