Oftan Chlora eye ointment contains chloramphenicol, which stops bacteria from growing and is used to treat and prevent bacterial eye infections.

How to Use

Dosage

Apply about 1 cm of ointment to the infected eye several times a day.

Method

Wash your hands. Pull your lower eyelid down, then apply about 1 cm of ointment between your eyelid and your eye, looking upwards. Close your eye and blink a few times to spread the ointment evenly, then close the tube. If you use other eye medicines, apply this ointment last and wait 5 minutes between medicines.

Important

Use as directed by your doctor. Typically, this means applying it several times a day. For newborn babies, treatment should not last longer than 10 to 14 days.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Temporary eye irritation, such as itching, burning, stinging, red eyes, and new infections.
  • Peripheral nerve disease (neuropathy).
  • Optic nerve inflammation.
  • Two types of bone marrow problems: 1. A temporary bone marrow problem related to the dose, with changes in the bone marrow; 2. A severe, long-lasting blood problem called aplastic anemia (not related to the dose).
  • Allergic conjunctivitis (eye surface inflammation).
  • Potentially life-threatening allergic reactions (severe allergic reactions).
  • Sudden swelling in the skin, mouth/throat, or internal organs (angioedema); hives; skin rash with blisters, bumps, and spots.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to chloramphenicol or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you or a family member have a blood disorder, such as aplastic anemia.
  • Do not use with other medicines that can suppress bone marrow function.
  • This eye ointment can temporarily blur your vision. Do not drive or operate machines until your vision is clear again.
  • Do not wear contact lenses while using Oftan Chlora eye ointment.
