How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the exact dose for your condition. Treatment usually starts with 20 mg given every 4 weeks.

Method

This medicine is always given as a deep injection into a buttock muscle. If you use it regularly, alternate between the left and right buttock.

Important

Your doctor will adjust your dose as needed, usually up to a maximum of 40 mg every 4 weeks.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Gallstones, causing sudden back pain.
  • High blood sugar.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Nausea.
  • Constipation.
  • Flatulence (gas).
  • Headache.
  • Pain at the injection site.
RARE
  • Underactive thyroid (tiredness, feeling cold, changes in weight and appetite, swollen neck).
  • Changes in thyroid function test results.
  • Gallbladder inflammation (upper stomach pain, fever, nausea, yellow skin/eyes).
  • Low blood sugar.
  • Impaired glucose tolerance.
  • Slow heart rate.
  • Thirst, low urine output, dark urine, dry and red skin.
  • Fast heart rate.
  • Allergic reactions, such as rash.
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) that can cause breathing or swallowing difficulties, swelling, tingling, drop in blood pressure, or fainting.
  • Pancreatitis (sudden upper stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea).
  • Liver inflammation (yellow skin/eyes, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, general weakness, itching, light-colored urine).
  • Irregular heartbeat.
  • Low platelet count (may lead to bleeding or bruising).
  • Indigestion after meals.
  • Vomiting.
  • Feeling of fullness.
  • Fatty stools.
  • Loose stools.
  • Changes in stool color.
  • Dizziness.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Changes in liver function test results.
  • Hair loss.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Weakness.

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had gallstones, or if you experience fever, chills, stomach pain, or yellow skin/eyes. This medicine can cause gallstones.
  • If you have diabetes, tell your doctor, as this medicine can affect your blood sugar levels. Your blood sugar should be checked regularly.
  • If you have had a B12 vitamin deficiency, your doctor might check your B12 levels regularly.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy. Use effective birth control during treatment if you can become pregnant. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
