How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your exact dose, usually starting with 20 mg given every 4 weeks, which may be adjusted based on your condition and response to treatment.

Method

This medicine is always given as an injection into a large muscle, usually in your buttock. The injection site should be alternated between the left and right buttock with repeated use. Only a trained healthcare professional should give you this injection.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum dose for each 4-week injection cycle, which can be up to 40 mg depending on your condition. This medicine is not given daily.

  • Gallstones that cause sudden back pain
  • High blood sugar
  • Low thyroid function (symptoms include changes in heart rate, appetite, or weight; tiredness, feeling cold, or swelling in the front of the neck)
  • Changes in thyroid test results
  • Gallbladder inflammation (symptoms include pain in the upper right belly, fever, nausea, yellow skin and eyes)
  • Low blood sugar
  • Difficulty processing sugar (impaired glucose tolerance)
  • Slow heart rate
  • Diarrhea

  • Nausea (feeling sick)

RARE
  • Thirst, low urine output, dark urine, dry and red skin

  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) causing breathing/swallowing difficulties, swelling, tingling, possibly low blood pressure, dizziness, or loss of consciousness
  • Pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis) with sudden upper belly pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis) with yellow skin and eyes, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, general unwell feeling, itching, pale urine
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Low platelet count, which can lead to increased bleeding or bruising

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to octreotide or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Inform your doctor if you have gallstones or have had them before, as long-term use can cause gallstones. Your doctor may check your gallbladder regularly.
  • If you have diabetes, Octreotide ratiopharm can affect your blood sugar levels. Your blood sugar should be checked regularly.
  • If you have a history of B12 deficiency, your doctor may check your B12 levels regularly.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor. Women who can get pregnant should use effective birth control during treatment.
