How to Use

Dosage

The dose is 0.3 micrograms per kilogram of body weight.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection under the skin or into a vein, diluted in a hospital by trained medical staff.

Important

The initial dose can be repeated 1-2 times every 6-12 hours, but repeated doses may reduce effectiveness.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach ache
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Headache
  • Tiredness (with large doses)
  • Temporary fast heartbeat
  • Redness in the face due to a drop in blood pressure (with large doses)
RARE
  • Dizziness (with large doses)
  • Low sodium levels in the blood
  • Allergic skin reactions

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to desmopressin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you drink unusually large amounts of fluid (polydipsia).
  • Do not use if you have had unstable angina (chest pain during exertion).
  • Do not use if you have a condition requiring diuretics, such as heart failure.
  • Do not use if you have low sodium levels in your blood (hyponatremia).

  • Do not use if you have von Willebrand disease type IIB.
  • Limit your fluid intake as too much fluid can build up in your body while taking this medicine. Drink only to quench thirst.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of fluid retention and hyponatraemia. Treatment of ADH deficiency can be started under specialist supervision. (updated 6.11.2023)
